Actually I came online because of a dispute I am dealing with and am answering a few wilheim posts.
ILMW - to be honest being a Viet Nam Veteran my life could have went down one of two roads (contraband wise). In the Nam you had two basic factions among the enlisted men in my outfit just like most other units in country. The first included mostly lifers (career soldiers) and some first termers like myself who were all boozers. We got drunk a lot.
The second, commonly known as "the heads" were the drug users, with weed not even considered a drug really, but a lot of dudes were into what was then called smack (heroin), a smaller group did acid and other hallucinogens that actually were smuggled from the US to Southeast Asia as opposed to the homegrown weed and heroin that was as easy as buying cigaretts or candy at that place and time.
So to answer your question, other than a little experimental weed back in the 70's during the post VietNam Disco era I have been a boozer and have not done many drugs. Last year I was given some valium by a doctor because of an incident and it really sent me for a loop, I didn't even know I was high until I was told later by several people including my boss who I had a meeting with during that week (I only had 30 5mg pills).
That said, I managed to stop drinking on the 22nd of April of 1990 and have not had a drink since that day. In the beginning I needed a lot of help from a lot of people, principally at first from the VA Hospital in Brocton Mass. So with plenty of support from the VA and a certain well known group one day at a time I made it thru my first year and it has got a little easier as the years went by but to this day I have to be careful around alcohol and cannot have even a single drink.
Sorry to dissapoint.
