Why would the Bears sign a contract to never make the Super Bowl for the next 7 years?

First off the 7 years is for cap purposes...the price for a good quarterback is high and he is good I did not say great, Trestman did a nice job with him this year, they have a good offense now and 3 top receivers for him to throw to....there problem is D, they score points but give up a ton.....they will have a very solid offense for awhile they will now spend all there money on defense thru draft and free agency

He is often injured and just mediocre at best. Not worth the price, and he wont be the leader of a Super Bowl team no matter what weapons he has. He folds under pressure way too much 1 and done games. He isn't mentally tough, and his body isn't physically tough. Not worth it imo

Bears are getting a steal. He's the best QB they've had in 40 years. It would be suicide for Trestman to risk trying to win with a rookie QB through the draft. Matt Schaub and Michael Vick would probably be their only other options and Josh McCown turns 35 over the summer, no thanks.

As mentioned previously, what was the alternative? Whichever alternative you look at, it’s certainly job suicide for the decision makers involved and likely career suicide.

This was such a no-brainer that the powers that be at other organizations would likely avoid the parties involved in future job opportunities based on how poorly they handled this situation. McCown, any of the sub-par FA’s available, staying put in the draft and selecting a QB first or trading up for one in the first would all be such a colossal errors these guys would never shake those decisions.

The deal was very favorable for Chicago, they didn’t overpay and they have plenty of options available to them in the future on how to handle Cutler down the line.

Trestman is “supposed” to be a QB guru, so let’s see what he can do with Cutler. Year one, he certainly showed improvement. He has the most talent at the skill positions he has had in his time in Chicago and more importantly he finally appears to have some protection, which he hasn’t had in nearly the entire time he has been in Chicago. He has played behind some of the worst offensive lines during his time at Chicago and was steadily getting pummeled.


Is he an oddball, sure, a leader, doesn’t appear to be by all accounts, but the guy is ridiculously talented and will lead an offense loaded with talent that finally has the semblance of an NFL caliber offensive line. Can’t knock Cutler for the Green Bay game, he played a solid game and the porous defense lost it for them. No other option here for the Bears.
