Why running QB's are so overrated

The best QB's in the league are the one's that are accurate and have pocket awareness. Remember Montana hitting Rice in perfect stride or Aikman dropping the ball perfectly to Irvin. Watch the way that Gannon hits Garner so that Garner doesn't have to miss a step or slow at all. Favre can throw the ball in opening of 6 inches. The other things that a lot of these QB's have in common is that it's as if they have eyes in the backs of their head. They get rid of the ball a second before they're hit. I remember an immobile Marino stepping to the right or left to avoid a rush and then throwing for a 60 yd TD. They have a feel for the rush. Today's running QB's don't see a rusher when he's right in his face and they fumble. They also fumble when they leave the pocket and carry they ball a foot away from there body so that a strong wind will knock the ball out of their hand. I think that publicity and higlights have made QB's like McNabb as popular as he is because it sure isn't production. The same goes for the other running QB's that have never looked at a 3rd receiver in their life. They have a tough enough time hitting the first rec that they look at. In my book I'll take the accurate passer that can hit a rec in stride and the guy with pocket awareness.

raiders, can't totally agree with you. Yes, the current "running" QBs (Vick, McNAbb) have these issues, but that is because they cannot throw as well as others or don't have the receiveing core to back them up. A mobile QB is always a bonus because you have to defend against him running the ball when the receivers are covered. Right now, the running QB is just being worked out. Within 2-3 years, I think you will see the majority of QB doing this in the NFL.

drunkguy,

a mobile QB who gets injured and can't play a full season is a bonus how? what good is the flash and dash while sitting on the bench in a cast?

He led the team in rushing every year. They went 1-4 in the playoffs with him under center. 'Nuff said.

College Defensive speed is one thing. NFL defensive speed is another, not to mention the pain inflicted by Pros. A running QB is not wise in the NFL.

A mobile quarterback is certainly a plus.
Steve Young and John Elway are prime historical examples. Of course, mobility is not the same as a "running" quarterback.

None of the so-called running quarterbacks have lived up to the hype. They can be exciting to watch, they often get injured, and when the day is over and you are sorting the results, quarterbacks who don't make mistakes and run their offenses properly are the ones going to the playoffs.

Manning proves once again why you want a thrower over a runner. What a game!!!!!!!!!

Tampa Bays best cover corner got hurt in the 2nd qtr, Kelly from USC. So you had a tired pass rush and a slow guy on Harrison, and a soft zone last 4 minuntes, Colts win had nothing to do with Manning, Manning was the reason they were down 3 tds to begin with.

Damn,

I could have swore that was Manning throwing the ball to Harrison in the 4th quarter. Who was that QB Rail?

General,

Thanks for the stats... I guess Rail figures he could do better.

General,

I think you're right, I mean, he only did something no other qb in the history of the NFL had done, lead a team back from 21 down with less than 4 minutes to go and win. I think Indy ought to trade for Rail's hero, Doug Flutie, and stick him in the lineup.

No, Jaypaw, I wouldn't make that direct comparison.

Steve McNair is certainly a pocket passer, though he is mobile. Culpepper also is.

There are very few white quarterbacks with the athleticism to be considered "runners" though..most of those get swapped to another position than quarterback, which I guess is just insulting to suggest to a black college quarterback who can't pass but can run like crazy.
