I was watching a report where a famous music conductor and his wife went to Switzerland to be euthanized. His wife and cancer and he was very old and had several problems so they chose to go together.

They had to sign documents stating that their death would not bring financial gain and that they knew that after their nightly injections that they would not wake up.

Seems so much more dignified than all the pain and having to have someone else wipe your ass as you have to endure the slow and horrid decay of your earthly vehicle.

Laws preventing this have to be driven by religion because they run in contrast to good sense and I thought that our constitution gave us freedom of and from religion.

That's the kicker

Knowing the track record of government, soon they would be euthanizing people against their will if it were legalized.

Either way, this is a state issue and the federal government should not get involved.

This is laughable because it comes up too often. It's one of those issues that you might be against until you see your wife/son/etc dying in extreme pain.

That's really beside the point. The federal government has no business deciding this issue. If you are a true american and believe in the constitution this is a STATES ISSUE.

Allow me to make it even easier.

If you're a true American and desire to end your life peacefully, then there's a bevy of information on how to make it happen.

I'm confident that anyone who wishes to end their lives peacefully (especially at an advanced age) doesn't really give a crap what the US federal government or anyone else thinks about it.

Fuck that. It isn't anyone's issue but the person...not the state, not the feds, nobody else.

Of course it's the persons issue. If you want to kill yourself, by all means go head and do so! As Barman pointed out, there is enough information out there to help you accomplish this goal without the aid of the government. It's the states issue on whether or not assisted suicide should be legal.

Let's be real here, if assisted suicide were completely legal we'd have pharmaceutical companies advertising for people to kill themselves so they'd get a payday. Does anyone really want to live in that sick, degenerate society?

I'm actually 100% for assisted suicide when it comes to terminally ill patients. I'm just not for the government or pharmaceutical companies being involved at all. They've shown their true colors time and time again as psychopaths who despise human life.

It would be a simple matter to repeal the laws which criminalize assisted suicide while also maintaining a ban on pharmaceutical companies advertising products to be used for that purpose.

Respectfully, you've unwittingly moved back into a discussion of whether you (or I or anyone else) "agrees" with assisted suicide.

With each passing day, the public is becoming educated to the reality that it doesn't matter what ANYONE thinks - either individuals or government agencies - about their freely choosing to peacefully end their lives at a time and place of their choice.

I'm reasonably confident that laws against assisted suicide will likely remain in place for most or all of my own lifetime (I'm 49 now). My response?

Big Deal.

I have equally great confidence that barring accidental death, I'll be the one who ends my life when and where I choose, as will my spouse.

You and your wife have already agreed to kill yourselves?

We have agreed that barring accidental death, it's very likely that we will at some point in the future (hopefully many decades away) choose to end our own life rather than live in a clearly substandard form of mental or physical health.

I wish that were the case and it would stay that way. I just don't trust our government at the federal level, plain and simple. They will find a way to perverse it, as they are very corrupt by nature. I'm all for individual states passing laws similar to Oregon and Washingtons.
