Good thread. Terrefic replys.

Coconutman, you also have a lot of fine women per capita. :) Take the good with the bad. First time I walked through Manhattan, I think my jaw almost hit the ground.

Dsethi, great point when you say "much social activity people engage in revolves around eating".

What amazed me is in the Documentary 'super size me' that they showed these young school kids a picture of Jesus. And NONE of them know who it was (sorry relegious right). But then they showed them a picture of Ronald Mcdonald. And they ALL knew who he was. Bad eating habits are forced on Americans at a young age. And if they could still get away with it, they would be showing the Cartoon Camel to put it in young minds about smoking.

u right ...starts when they r young....hey, how about sum potato chips while watchn tv ? :ohno:

Things like TV and computers don't make people fat though. You can watch all the TV you want and be on the comp all you want as long as you take some time to exercise during the day. The eating habits are what make people fat and lack of exercise. There is just way to many fast food resteraunts. Then again fat fucks keep them in bussiness.

  • lazy
  • fast food
  • horrible eating habits in general
  • portions too large
  • caramel machiados (or whatever calorie laced drink from Starbucks is one's choice)
  • sedentary lifestyles
  • we drive instead of walk
  • we work too much
  • parents feed kids crap instilling horrible eating habits - this is the biggest problem IMO. I see it all the time with our friends and their kids. We feed our daughter (who is 3) everything we eat. She doesn't always like it so there are occassions when we have to accomodate it, but generally speaking, she eats what we have. That includes sushi (which she loves), shrimp, steak, lobster tails, vegetables, fruits, salad, whatever, she eats and likes most of it. We also don't give her a bunch of crap to dip it in so everything tastes like ketchup. Our neighbor's kids eat nothing but microwaved Kraft Mac & Cheese (no other brand will suffice), Pizza and chicken fingers/fries or some other garbage food loaded in ketchup. They ate at our place one day and the kids wouldn't even eat Kraft Mac & Cheese b/c my wife boiled the pasta instead of microwaving it. They are 3 and 6, now, their mother is trying to get them to eat more types of food and healthier food and they basically won't eat anything new. As bad as it sounds, you "train" your kids to eat like crap and they will eat like crap.
  • ketchup, ranch, mayo is on everything
  • kids don't exercise, they sit on their asses playing video games
  • TV, Tivo, DVR, Computers, 800 channels on DirecTV
  • always in a hurry making eating out or eating crap food at home easier - and, we eat too fast which causes us to eat more food than will satiate
  • take out/delivery - easy and almost always is crappy food.

A.euros and asians always have a cig in there mouth instead of food.
B. Americans wealthy so the eat out more and large potions. the bottomless coke with the free refills, etc.
C. Americans stuck in traffic instead of walking or riding a bicycle to work like chinese.
D. Southeast Americans lots of fried food.

A. Asians are skinnier naturally, diet plays a large part.
B. America is far from the only wealthy country in the world.
C. Yes, using the car to go everywhere doesn't help.
D. Junk food is a huge part of it.

This weight thing is a world wide problem and no doubt the Americans are leading the way.

True, the world is getting fatter - not just the americans. It's a problem with the modern lifestyle, people aren't getting the exercise at work and are "too tired" after a long day to exercise later, as well as being "too tired" to make a proper meal. Funny thing is that a good workout can make you feel better, and a good meal can be quick/easy to prepare while tasting better.

I work for a company that rents specialty equipment and one of our product lines is bariatric products--medical equipment for large people (greater than 600 pounds). We can't keep the stuff in stock--it's amazing!

As part of the greatest nation an average American has far more opportunities in a day to pick up a few extra calories than an average citizen in less developed parts of the world. The American marketing of products is just too good!

As other countries improve they will have increasing options also and may see similar situations.

The basic facts are that America has the biggest and best steaks, burgers etc. other countries may try to catch up but by the time they do America will have maintained its superiority and moved on to greater burger sizes and larger pants.

Its nearly 3:30 pm eastern time and here is what Ive eaten and done thus far today.

Woke up at 9:15, brushed teeth, taken a whiz, walked one block to corner store to get my morning usa today and goodies, ate a microwave burrito, drank two glasses of water and can of mountain dew.

Other than that, Ive sat on couch all day trading market and posting at rx and aol im.

Did get off couch one other time to take a second whiz and late morning dump to read the newspaper.

That being said, in a few minutes, I am headed to local park to walk a few miles.

Im starting my decathalon training routine, tomorrow....maybe.

Man, everyone answered this question so seriously that I feel compelled to do so as well.

U.S. appears to have more fat bodies in comparison to Euro & Asian nations and it's no surprise. We are infatuated with our cars, want bargains and convenience, and are Pavlovian slaves to the TV - commercials and programming.

I hardly ever eat at a fast food joint anymore. Burger, fries, and soda - super-sized - puts you on the fast track to obesity and disease.

Look at these soda machines and lunches served in schools then look at what is served in homes. Kids left to make their own dietary choices are gonna pick th e wrong stuff.

With that I am off to do my cardio and lifting.

Just take a look around a "all you can eat buffet". I think lack of excercise ranks right up there as the culprit but gluttony has to take the cake. (pun intended).

right and lack of excercise comes from a lack of discipline.

I have no discipline, if food is on my plate I eat it. I have taken to ordering sides that I don't like simply so I won't eat too much.

What you eat is the problem. Carbs!
Skinny nation 30 yrs ago, lots of fat, no sugar!
46oz big gulps didn't exist.
Eat your pork chop or no dessert!
Eggs got thrown out for pop tarts!
Now eggs are a go! No cholesterol prob.

Pervert scare. I got driven to school never, and got a ride home only on the last day.
Now every parent thinks if they don't drive them," they will get driven!" Bullshit paranoia!~!

Last bit: If you have a fat dog is it because he opened the fridge by himself??
If you have a fat toddler??? WTF, is the rugrat ordering in?

Carbs aren't the problem, they're the major vital part of our diet.

It's what you eat, when you eat it, how much you eat and how much energy you burn.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A Las Vegas casino cafe is rewarding patrons who can put away a 2-foot, 6-pound burrito with a most logical prize—free unlimited rides on a roller coaster that runs in both forward and reverse.

The offer comes with a caveat, though: Those who accept the challenge but can't finish "The Bomb" burrito have to take a picture with an extra small, pink T-shirt that says "Weenie."
The NASCAR Cafe at the Sahara Hotel & Casino began selling the cheese-and-guacamole slathered burrito on Thursday for $19.95. Those who can finish the monstrous entree get it for free, along with two unlimited coaster passes and a T-shirt proclaiming they "Conquered the Bomb."
