Why would people go to the stadium if they could watch it on TV?

It makes perfect sense actually

This seems pretty old school to me. In the era of HD and surround sound along with silly ticket prices, they need to give way.

I highly doubt anyone is going to say "The game is going to be blacked out, so let's take out a loan and go to the stadium to see it."

Not sure, but there is a huge difference between 81 MLB home games, and 8 NFL home games.

The answer is EXACTLY what Calvin said but you have to add one important fact.

The cost of some baseball tickets can be as low as $1 for kids and $5 for adults.

You cant TOUCH an NFL game for less than $40 a ticket, and that is to sit in the nose bleed section.

Trust me that blackouts are VERY fair to product that is put on the field. I know that it sucks, but it is only fair to the owners

What pisses me off is that they don't offer all the NFL games on Comcast.
If they would even just have a pay per game option...say $5, I would gladly be buying many games.

they have the NFL Red Zone channel. I just added it yesterday and am watching it now. It's pretty good!

They switch from game to game when a team gets into the red zone. The Jags game is blacked out here but they even showed some of that. See if you're area has it. It's $5 for me. you have to get the Sports Entertainment Package to get it.

I don't want to be switching from game to game at their whim. I want to watch the game I want when I want.

Apparently Direct TV's exclusive deal is up in 2010. Maybe then Comcast will offer their own version of Sunday ticket which I will happily buy.

NFL Lengthens Its Deal With Direct TV

If you're hoping that at some point you'll be able to get Sunday Ticket on your cable provider, think again. You're better off hoping that college football will comes to its senses and offer a playoff.

DirecTV and the NFL have worked out a deal to extend the satellite provider's exclusive contract through 2014, two years beyond the current deal. The NFL will get $1 billion a year from DirecTV under the new deal, a $300,000 bump from its current deal, which means football fans who have gotten used to paying an arm and a leg for Sunday Ticket now will have to get used to throwing in a kidney as well.

DirecTV is the only company that has ever had the rights to what's arguably the most valuable "speciality" sports product on TV. While its questionable how much money it makes on Sunday Ticket directly because of the huge check it cuts to the NFL, Sunday Ticket does give the satellite company a huge selling point in attracting customers like me, who can't imagine making it through football season with only three games to watch on a normal Sunday afternoon.

The deal does have something for those who can't get DirecTV. In the new deal, the NFL also has the right to eventually offer those fans the option of buying Sunday Ticket for their computer, although they will have to prove that they cannot get DirecTV at their house That likely won't start until 2012, and there's no word on pricing, but it might be worth planting trees now on the southwest part of your yard if you know that you're stuck with cable so you'll be ready when it does roll out.

There is good news for people who are stuck with cable--the Red Zone channel will eventually be offered for a fee to other television providers. While it won't show all of any other game, it jumps from game to game, allowing fans to watch the good parts of almost all of the early games at the same time.

The TV stations would not increase their bids for the NFL games if the league eliminated the blackout policy. But it does lead to a small amount of extra tickets. So it absolutely does bring in extra revenue

Baseball teams own their own TV rights and either broadcast the games on their own TV stations or sell them, which is a huge incentive to not lose TV viewers

The NFL blackout rules would change real quick if they suddenly found themselves blacking out too many games and upsetting the TV stations that pay billions to broadcast the game

It used to be all home games were blacked out sold out or not.

Back in the late 60's or early 70's the congressmen could not watch the Redskins who were sold out for years to come.

So they introduced a bill thus the blackout rule.

To me having the Sunday Ticket is a waste of money.

Six hours of jumping from game to game and even with the splits it's hard to concentrate and at end of day you feel as if you jacked off and need to watch sports center to see what the hell really happened.

If the NFL ever decides to stagger start times like NCAA I will pay the extortion money.

Till then FUCK EM

Blackout streak over? Bucs nearly sold out for MNF vs. Colts

It looks like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' embarrassing streak of home blackouts is about to end.
The Bucs are only about 2,000 seats away from selling out Raymond James Stadium for Monday night's game against the Indianapolis Colts, a team spokesman told the Tampa Tribune on Wednesday.
Tampa Bay has had 10 consecutive regular-season games blacked out on local TV.
According to NFL rules, home games must be sold out 72 hours before kickoff to avoid a TV blackout within a 75-mile radius of the local market. Teams can ask the league for a 24-hour extension if the game is close to selling out.
"It would be awesome," Bucs coach Raheem Morris told the Tribune about the prospect of a nationally televised sellout Monday night.
