Why do we make athletes and movie stars so wealthy?

Think about it. These people live in castles and mansions. They spend more in a month than we'll make our whole lives in some cases.

The amount of wealth they accumulate is unbelievable and yet we put them on that pedestal.

I wonder if in the future, much more distant future, this will change as the human species wises up and gets more intelligent.

Maybe athletes and celebrities will go back to being low brow, low paid folks like the old times, there to entertain us but not get filthy rich.

So many naive people hated Lebron for saying something to the effect of ''I'll still be living the good life and you people still have to get up in the morning and go to your jobs''

Don't be foolish in thinking all celebrities and athletes don't secretly think that way of us.

I like few celebrities. Athletes I don't care about one bit. Outside of gambling I don't care about sports so I never grew up worshiping their abilities.

Take away their talent and most of them are extremely dumb.

They still deserve to be rich because their jobs are 1 in a million. For every LeBron you have thousands of guys who are failures at basketball.

Technology has brought actors & athletes closer to us by TV, internet, etc. We the public are brainwashed into buying into their BS. Think about it, actors act out, & if they're believable enough to where the audience lose themselves in the movie, the actors get paid big money for making themselves as actors believable.

Lmao@ athletes getting paid the money they do now a days. Athletes are actors as well, they sell themselves in a game they tend to play better than others. If it wasn't for we the public buying the tickets to the games, the clothing, drinks, etc selling in their name, they would no be making much money.

The demand for the product is there, & since we are willing to indulge in watching movies & sports, the money will always be there. And let's not forgot corporate media & the money they put into advertisement for these actors & athletes.

We now have actors & athletes I'm commercials selling cars, lol, easy money, & it's not Luke they need the extra money.

Its only gonna get worse, & the pay these athletes & actors receive will keep.going up, BUT, in the future, whetgere its 10 years or 30 years, it will.all come crashing down. Its impossible to sustain this disparity between the really rich & average & poor. Will we see it in our lifetime? I don't know.

Why is it impossible to sustain that disparity? Elaborate.

I can't reply for TCG, but I would venture that with more avenues for entertainment performers to deliver their product that the incredibly high end incomes ($20-30m per year?) will become less common.

Vast majority of actors and athletes aren't getting insanely rich, only the ones at the very top. The same is true for most all other fields.

Because they are an elite, talented few.

Especially pro athletes.

The talent gap between a professional ball player vs your avg collegiate player is night & day...

Can you dunk a basketball from the free throw line?

Can you hit a 99mph fastball with the game on the line?

How about covering antonio brown on a slant?

Bounceback: Except that I would have done a better job spelling "demand", you said it way better than I could have. And the disparity will never go away.

If you went to work every day and somewhere between 20 and 80 thousand people showed up to watch you work, you'd be rich too...

But making millions and batting 189 is a joke. Should be paid on their performance

Using your suggested criteria of pay for performance, half of the workers in the country would be paid minimum wage and everyone in a union would be fired.

You can blame the owners for making the players so wealthy. Who are they bidding against. If I'm a college football player with marginal grades what else am I going to do with my life. If they were all paid less than a million a year they would still choose professional football. Do you think would choose a job in the real world that paid $50,000 to $70,000 a year. Actors in movies are different. Say a studio wants Leonardo for a movie. Leo says no thanks I already have plenty of money and I would rather be on a yacht with hot girlfriends. Sure the producer or director can pick another actor to play the part but they know with Leonardo they will make the most money. I'm convinced you could break the union in every professional sports league and lower the salaries. You have a few whacky owners out there like the late George Steinbrenner and Jerry Jones who will pay anything to land star players but most owners aren't like that. I say again if you specialize in a sport and have no other options in life where are you going to go.

Just supply and demand.

In what other world do you see a mediocre at best qb in Fitzpatrick who is 30 plus turn down 8 million a year. Because he is 1 of 32-40 ( counting back ups that may start) of people in the entire world for a position.

The ESPN thread is the opposite. Tons of people could do those jobs.
