why do some sportbooks offer a free pick contest?

What do they get out of it? I know 5d you win 5 in a row, you get $50 fp with rollover.

I don't think that is a reason someone would join/stay with a book

as a bonus for playing at their book.

You have to be active to fully cash the prizes too...so really, if you are playing the contests, you are active with them...which is what they want.

Betjm's contest was great.

It is a way to provide a bonus for playing there. You can enter the contests for free sometimes but the payout is 10-25% of the total prize so it entices the bettor to post up also to be active.
