Why didn't Graham Harrel of Texas Tech get picked?

Was it his arm strength or the fact he played in that offense?

The guy has a top talent out of high school, put up amazing stats, and has NFL size as opposed to a Chase Daniel type (who was highly touted out of HS as well).

Did his arm just not impress in the combine stuff? Or were people worried he was gonna be another Timmy Chang because of the offense?

Yeah he signed after the draft but it seemed like he had enough tools to get someone to take a chance with a draft pick. Really surprised after 250+ picks no one even took a chance.

Well, ESPN on ABC said he was great all season. That is enough for me.

Most likely because he set up in the shotgun all the time which isn't the way the professional game is played. He was likely watched at the camps trying to drop back and passed and was poor in doing so. Just speculation on my part.

product of system

If it was some unheralded kid I'd tend to agree with you more but Harrell was a top 20 QB out of high school. Not the best but the college scouts saw something in him. His numbers were a product of the system for sure but I figured he'd at least be worth a late round flier with his NFL size and numbers.

yes he is a product of a weird system but he looked good to me. Let me ask you this does Florida run a NFL system. Not even close. Does West Virginia. Nope, But Pat White was drafted in round 2 and Tebow will be a first rounder next year. All I know is I watch the games and kid could flat throw the ball. But NFL teams know alot more than I do and there must be some reason why he isn't going to get a shot.

For the record according to rivals the kid was the #7 PRO-STYLE QB in the country coming out of high school. I guess he should have went to Georgia insted. They were recruting him.

yea quite honestly I was surprised as well. I can't even pretend to analyze talent like the people paid to do it, so I'm not sure

With all the huge busts, sometimes I wonder if the guys paid the big bucks are any better then us couch potatoes.

He didn't get picked because he won't be successful at the next level. Check out how BJ Symons or Kliff Kingsbury have done.

How about all those BYU QB's that throw the ball around or even those Hawaii QB's. They all play in a system that doesn't work in the NFL. This is a real easy concept to understand.

If the guy is unheralded in HS and does great in that type of offense in college I guess I'd be worried more then a top HS quarterback who can play a pro style offense and then just got stuck in a high-octane one for college.

Do you realize Clay Mathews Jr. was a walk on at USC and he still went in the first round? It doesn't matter what you do in HS. If you're at a college and the scouts can envision you performing in a pro-style offense or defense and you're an athlete then you'll play.

Why are we even talking about high school. Who gives a shit about your HS performance.

It does matter what you do in high school to an extent... hence Matt Cassell being drafted at all.

No it does not. To what extent do you think NFL teams know what a college prospect has done in HS?

Matt Cassell played in a pro-style system at USC. He didn't play but he practiced every single day against a very good USC defense. He spent 4 years at one of the best football programs in CFB and he played behind one of the best QB's in college at the time. He also had the benefit of some of the best coaching around. Scouts have to take all of this into consideration and obviously they did. I'm still not convinced he's as good as he showed last year but time will tell.

The Texas Tech QB's have shown us time and time again they cannot perform in the NFL. Is it a coincidence or a trend?

Pat White was drafted as a WR, he has no chance of making it as a QB.

Tebow is slotted around the middle of the first round, but I don't know if any team will take him to be their franchise QB. he may be some sort of hybrid because he is definitely not going to pass anyone to a super bowl.

Cassell was drafted because he played QB at USC, not because of what he did in high school.

Enfuego is right; high school doesn't mean shit. Rivals.com has made a killing on thousands of idiots who think that high school stardom directly translates to college success. Trying to take high school success and translating to professional success is even more asinine.
