Why didn't AZ trade R Johnson ?

I don't get it ? Why pay his salary, when you have the worst record in MLB ? Wouldn't getting some prospects while dumping his salary be better for the club ? Certainly they could have gotten something nice for him.

Please explain this ( non) move to me.

it wasn't up to the D'backs here.

RJ can veto any trade he wants - and he did so here.

whether the D'backs wanted to get rid of him - or not - is irrelevant. he didn't want to leave. he has a no-trade clause in his contract. that means he can't be traded w/o his OK - and in this case - he didn't give it.

now - if the ??? is why didn't he OK a trade - that is a good question. maybe because he has a ring - and wants to stay in AZ because of his family. he said he woulda gone to NYY - but they had nothing to offer - so he didn't go.

Winky: It still seems something could have been worked out. Wouldn't cash from George, work for Az, they could spend it next season.

Randy is hardly a lock to play next season, it still seems silly for Randy to be in AZ. Az isn't going to re-build in one year !

I think it's stubborn personalities that prevented some deal here. Just my opinion.

Randy agreed to consider a trade only if it helped the DBacks prospects. He said that publicly, that he felt they owed the fans more than they were giving and just getting a boatload of cash wouldn't cut it when they are the worst team in the majors. Refreshing to hear that from a guy who clearly can't be happy pitching for such a lousy team. Money isn't everything to him and it shouldn't be since he surely has plenty to last many lifetimes.

Besides he still is a decent draw for the team and adds to their bottom line by going out there every fifth game. Supposedly they asked for Posada and the Yanks declined. They have no prospects worth anything and won't give up anyone but marginal starters, so why even bother with the trade?

Wild Bill: No offense meant, but you're explanation sounds like a bunch of BS. Randy knows baseball is a business, He's a commodity, nothing more or less.

If being in Arizona, is so important, than why be willing to re-locate to NYC, they aren't exactly similar places ! I don't buy it.

He could go to San Diego, A fine city, and still be close to AZ, back in zona by Halloween. He might even work a Clemens-like deal , and only show when he has to start !

If anything, I say the opposite, he's intentionally sticking it to the D-backs, by exercising his no-trade clause. He don't care about them.

Yanks don't want to give much, money talks.

NYY could buy , say L Hernandez from Expos, trade to D-backs for Johnson, and any money, if necessary. D-backs could trade Livan next year, for prospects. 3-4 team deals could be made, etc.

Randy Johnson stays in AZ, to help the club, that's a laugh !

You must be kidding. Livan Hernandez for Randy Johnson? You think that would give the DBacks anything of value, or that someone would give them anything for that next year?

You aren't making sense here Doug, you are thinking as if it were yourself. The guy doesn't need a ring or money . Sure it is a business, but it doesn't have to be that way if you don't want it to be. The only place he could have gone to is LA and he thought about it for a night and turned it down. These guys get that right as part of being veterans signing veteran contracts.

This is just like Ricky Williams, everyone passing an opinion on someone choosing to do as they please. If you have money, if you have happiness, why be called wrong for doing as you please? What if I told you Doug, I have a job for you that pays twice what you make now, but it is in Tulsa or some other place far from where you want to be. If you turned that down does that make you a bad guy who is clueless and stupid, as some are implying about Ricky? Of course not.

I can tell you this, I know some people in Arizona and they love Randy for this. They are thinking just as he was, that sure it won't be turned around in a year but they would rather have some semblance of major league players than to give away what little they have for nothing that helps the team. Money only would go to pay down some of the losses the team is having, they surely won't use it to make the team better. And barring a quality starting player, there just was no reason to make the trade just to do it. What the Yanks wanted to give up were mediocre talents without much upside, or guys that are riding the bench right now.

WB: The trade was really off-top of my head, just an example. I'll maintain my position that Randy could have gone SOMEWHERE, else, while benefiting Az.

Let's let the board's opinion determine this !

Is that fair ?

I'm not trying to create controversy. Perhaps a few other opinions could be in order ?

At worst, maybe this thread has some legs.

Peace,

Wildbill's analysis seems right to me. When you're really good at something, you've proven yourself and have a shitload of cash to boot, the important things in life become living stress-free and doing what you believe in.

Take a look at Maslow's hierarchy of needs

It looks like DougJ doesn't know too many people at level 5 but it seems Randy Johnson is one of them.

RJ has said that He did not veto any trades ! Ariz said that they never received any trade offers that would improve their club . I believe that since RJ is signed for next season, they have all of the off-season to make a better trade as most of the teams with good prospects like Texas, Minn, and And Angels were very reluctant to part with their great prospects.NY has no great prospects.

I think it's just that nobody could give AZ enough for him. They weren't going to trade him at the end for less than what they thought his real value was.

Selig said he wasn't going to allow a cash deal for RJ,so since Nobody offered any decent prospects there was no deal to be made. Not alot of teams want to take on that contract for next year and give up prospects

RJ is good but 17 Mil for a 41 year old pitcher is just plain foolish !

-I think Ariz did the right thing, usually pressed ones are bad and in this case Ariz did not have many options, it's not like they are going to lose him in the offseason because he's signed.
