Why did State go for 2

State scores a TD with nine minutes left to go up 23-19. Then they subsequently went for two. The group of 10 or so that I was with wondered why they went for two there and couldnt come up with a realistic scenario where that extra point would come into play. Are we missing something here or was that just some outlandish shit?

I've been mulling that situation over and over and cannot understand why they didn't take the extra point.

There was no benefit of going for two.........

He wanted to be up 6 points. As us NCSTATE backers know they had already blocked a field goal in the game.

The "Book" says so. If they get it they are up by 6, if not you still need a td to beat you. Also, The Rutgers kicker had already missed a xp so the 6 could have been important.
Fwiw, If they would have kicked the xp Rutgers would have went for 2 on the other side.

Get it and they're up by six.. Two field goals for Rutgers possible.. Touchdown and a missed extra point for Rutgers still a tie.. Two touchdowns for Rutgers and a touchdown with two point conversion ties it instead of being for sure down 9 instead of 8. No point in only being up 5, going for two makes all the sense in the world.

They wanted to get up by 6. But really what started this whole unfortunate chain of events was the missed extra point by the Rutgers kicker in the first quarter. That missed extra point, combined with the missed FG, combined with the missed two point conversion cost the over players at least 5 points in this game.

they want to be up by 6
but the problem that these coaches don't understand is that if you go up by 5 you force THE OTHER TEAM to go for 2 if they score a td...

thus rutgers, after that next score, would have been up by 1 and then they would have had to go for 2 to be up by a fg, instead of just having to kick the xp for the fg lead

you ALWAYS want to make the other team have to convert the 2-pt conversion, but coaches make this mistake all the time..!!

ultimately, it might not have mattered with your 52 total, as rutgers might not have converted their 2-pt try, so don't stress too much about it

But if they missed which they did and Rutgers scored a TD.....NC St is now losing by 3 instead of 2. A FG only ties instead of winning the game. Have to look at what if......if they fall behind not only the scenario because they are ahead.

exactly...but they wouldn't be down by 2 bc rutgers would go for 2, so either they would be down by 1 or 3

also, if they score another fg they will only be up by 7 instead of 8, so another reason why they should kick the xp and not go for 2

like i said, coaches make this mistake all the time

They went for two to try and screw me on my over play, as if the RU kicker was not already doing a good enough job of that by himself.

Going for 2 isn't necessaily a bad thing to do in that situation. It can be justified. Burning a timeout before running the play can't be justified.

yeah the timeout really pissed me off there, to me the circumstances did not call for going for 2. The way rutgers was moving the ball in the 2nd half it was much better to be up 5 instead of 4 so that if rutgers scored a td at this point it would only take a fg drive to win the game if rutgers scored a TD.

basically im just pissed because the over was the right play here and it took a hailstorm of circumstances to fuck it up (especially @ 52)... oh well

saw some questionable coaching moves from O'Brien in the second half today, particularly keeping Harrison Beck in for three series...NCSU backers were fortunate to cash after it was all said and done but we will take it...
