I thought he was a step above the rest but starting to rethink. Most coaches mess this up which is not surprising being most are clueless when it comes to simple statistics. He takes a 5 yard penalty and 1st down over a 9 yard gain and 2nd and 1. Its a no brainer to take the 9 yards and 2nd and 1. What the hell was he thinking?

I will take 2nd and 1 over 1st and 10 all day long.

1st and 5 I can see both sides. I didnt watch the game so have no idea on circumstances but if I want to take a shot down the field (even if just to stretch the defense) id rather do it on 1st and 5 over 2nd and 1. (To me 2nd and 5 better than 3rd and 1)

The play by play actually shows it as a 10 yard gain which I think is wrong… but regardless he screwed up.

1st and 10 at CHI 45(1:38) (No Huddle, Shotgun) D.Brees pass short right to J.Graham pushed ob at CHI 35 for 10 yards (R.Mundy) [W.Young]. PENALTY on CHI-W.Young, Illegal Use of Hands, 5 yards, enforced at CHI 45 - No Play.
1st and 10 at CHI 40(1:33) (No Huddle, Shotgun) D.Brees pass short right to P.Thomas to CHI 38 for 2 yards (T.Jennings; C.Jones).

I just figured he took the penalty because he knew I had Graham on my fantasy team
I know of at least one person in our league who didn't advance to the championship round because of that call. I'd be pretty bummed if that had been my team. Fantasy aside, I thought Payton wanted the sure first down. Was definitely bizarre.

I rather have 1st and 10. Too many things can happen on 2nd 1. Holding or loss of yards etc...

In a normal situation it is probably better to take the yardage and make it 2nd and 1. Then you can run for it
or try to hit a big one down the field

HOWEVER

In this case the Saints have no timeouts with about 1.5 minutes to go in half so they are not running the ball right there.
They are going to pass, so the down is more important.

Miss the pass on 2nd and 1 and its 3rd down and you are still going to throw. Miss the pass on 1st and 10 and its only 2nd down.
I would trade 4 yards for an extra down ALL DAY long when I know that I have to pass anyway and I have Drew Brees.

Also One more point, if they take the penalty and dont get the first down they are still out of FG range, so the yards are even less important, 1st down is at the 35yd line, kick from the 36 is 53 yards, a tricky kick in those conditions.

I'd take the 1st and 10 unless there was a compelling reason to take the extra 4 yards or catch the defense with 2nd and short. In this case I would definitely take the 1st and 10.

What quarter was this? Never doubt sean payton and his thinking. Best offensive coach in football imo.

2nd quarter. I posted the play by play above. The Graham catch would have gotten them to the 35. Instead he took the ball at the 40.

This is the best explanation I have seen. I disagree with it but understand the logic.. if this is indeed what he was thinking.
