He's paid to his baseballs, not study english. If i was getting paid to play a sport in Japan I would practice my sport and play...i wouldn't waste my time learning the language, i'd hire a translator when i needed.

So if you were going to play baseball in japan for the next 20 years you wouldn't bother to learn the language? I am going to out on a limb and call bullshit on this one.

I was in a foreign country for a couple of months once. And by the end of my time there i was ordering food and making some weak small talk in that language. And i am terrible at learning new languages (almost flunked spanish in high school).

To live here for 10 years and not be virtually fluent in english is pretty ridiculous if you ask me.

He knows some English - but he has super low self confidence using it and I doubt you'll ever see him speak a word in English on TV again.

ok. that sounds reasonable I guess if he was burned before on TV.

If he was some lazy-ass who didnt learn anything or a Sammy Sosa fraud pretending not to understand I would have been pissed

Mike Scoscia learned spanish to talk to him.

Not just "him", just about the whole team and the owner. Moreno likes it that way, Artie had a hand in getting rid of any Whitey who wanted a raise.

Erstad, Kennedy, Glaus, Eckstein, Spezio, Washburn, Percival, among others.

It bothers the heck out of me. I don't expect him to be a master of elocution, however he is playing in the US and getting paid US dollars and somehow he could at least say thank you and i'm sorry my english isn't better and i will work on it. I went down to South Texas two weeks ago to sign some title papers on some beach property. I came out and there was a note on my car in Spanish and could read it somewhat and decided to find out exactly what it said. The manager said it notified me to move my car to the street because they were doing sandblasting and it would scratch the finish. I asked him why this was not in English and Spanish and he said we were 30 miles from the Mexican border and had quite a few Mexican customers. I said what about the US customers which i would guess would be about 70% and he didn't have an answer. I guess i better learn a new language because it looks like i am going to need it.

The entire MLB would be 80% Cuban, Hispanic and Oriental if it were easier for them to come here.

Be thankful for the words you can understand. lol.

Cubans ARE Hispanics, and "Oriental" is so '70's. These guys didn't build the railroads...we call them "Asians" now.

because he is media shy so not speaking English publicly helps him avoid most of the media.

This is true. It is his way of avoiding the media. Mike Scioscia was quoted
"...he knows better english than Hatcher" (referring to hitting instructor Mickey Hatcher.

We shall see if that theory holds form when Scioscia's contract is up.

Huntington Beach, don't you have to go pitch a tent at some little league game today?

Our Prime Minister Chretien was unintelligible in both official languages: French and English.

Just depends on your priorities.

I have lived in Costa Rica for 5 years and I am not fluent in Spanish. My need for it is exactly zero.

Complete waste of my time to even try. On my list of things to do I put it at number 500.

I would bet this is how Vladimir feels about learning to speak English.
