Looking at postwar Bush, Democrats are gloomy about 2004

WASHINGTON -- The swift fall of Baghdad has complicated what many Democrats had already viewed as the difficult task of unseating President Bush and winning back Congress next year, party leaders say.

Several expressed concern that the Iraq conflict had steeled Mr. Bush's national security credentials while reinforcing the Democrats' image as an antiwar party.

In interviews over several days, some Democrats said they were optimistic that the 2004 election, like the contest after the first gulf war, which led to the defeat of Mr. Bush's father, would end up as a referendum on the nation's ailing economy.

Yet as they watched Mr. Bush turn his sights to Syria, other party leaders expressed fresh concerns that the White House would not permit the election of 2004 to become a replay of 1992.

"The big difference is that the first gulf war ended," a prominent Democratic senator said. "This administration will never end the war. And because they never end the war, they will have an ongoing advantage. An open-ended war on terrorism that will never end and that keeps people constantly on edge. A never-ending military commitment in Iraq that might lead to other commitments beyond Iraq also keeps people focused on national security."

Well, liberal is not equal to Democrat, although sometimes we cross paths.

That said, I agree from a politcal strategy standpoint this will be a tough election, and the Democrats don't exactly have a shrewd political mind like a Karl Rove working for them, unless Dick Morris comes out of retirement.

Regardless what you think of him (and I don't think highly of Karl Rove), Dick Morris is a wise man, and Democrats sometimes need someone behind the scene telling them when to keep their mouth shut.

This is going to be a long war. This is a war on all terrorism.

Liberals - Blame Bin Laden for this long war, not Bush!

Dubya will have the country in such a mess by fall of 2004 he may not even run. You can take that to the bank, if you can stil trust them in 18 months.

That takes the cake. You seriously blame Cinton for causing 9-11? It's mind boggling how brilliant that is.

Think about it.

While clintoon was in office terrorist groups had free run at the US and the USs interests. Think before you jump to conclusions. The first WTC bombing, the khobars towers, the two africa bombings and the USS cole were all on clintoons watch.

clintoon would always say i'm going to get you and nothing would ever happened. Matter of fact the sudanese offer OBL to clintton on a silver platter three times and clintoon suck his head in sand.

after the somalia incident where 18 or 19 americans were killed clintoon quickly retreated and pulled out. OBL truly believed nothing would ever happen to him for bombing america so i do blame clintoon for not protecting america for all the bombings and therefore impowering al queda to bomb us on 9-11.

A little history lesson.GWB sr"s popularity was high after dessert storm. However he did not deal with the problems at home and eventually lost the election. It looks as though the economy is going to continue to be in a mess.If Jr continues to take away personal rights of Americans, and continues to let the economy spiral downward he may in fact have problems in the next election although it seems inconcievable at the moment.

The real question is, will 18 months be enough time for the lefties not only to canvas the soup kitchens to register voters, but also teach them how to punch a fukn ballot.

Sounds to me that you admit to yourself if the elderly voters in S.Fla voted properly the election would have had a different outcome. Good thinking.

Hmmm, 2nd term seems probable, albeit, the economy hasn't improved, Gw has been reducing taxes in order to stimulate economy. And the article does have validation regarding a change in leadership while at war. I do believe that Americans in whole are more secure knowing that we have a Secretary of State named Colin Powell vs Warren Christopher or Madeleine Albright and others that are very credible in the administration. What would a democrat put in his place? And which Democrat's solution to the economy would be to RAISE taxes? The economy is cyclical anyways. 8 years of growth with Reagan, 4 years of recession bush, 8 years of growth Clinton, 3 years recession thus far. It's bound to turnaround anyways. After Daschle's fiasco, I don't believe there is a strong enough democratic candidate to even win
the next election.

Of course, only time will tell.

Not sure why we have to limit that to the "elderly in S. Fla.", but if that makes you feel better about your position, so be it. But what would have been the fun in that? We would'nt have you conspiracy theorists to laugh at, and skyscrapers would probably still falling down around us, all in the name of "peace". Sure Al Gore would've been pissed about the WTC, but he would have been more thankful that the terrorists didn't go after the trees in central park.

Oh Yes Bush Senior's popularity was a lot higher after Desert Storm ended...I remember everyone was driving around L.A. with flags all over their cars, patriotism was everywhere...UNTIL the Rodney King Beating/Trial/Riot.
When I first saw the Rodney King beating on the T.V. I too with everyone else had a flag on my car, My truck and my wives car. BUT after a WEEK of the press really pushing the story and video in everyone's face and the Rev. Al Sharpton screaming on the news every hour...by the end of the week most of the flags had been taken down.

The Rodney King Show on the news ENDED the roar of patriotism that grew from the Gulf War.

This basically ended Bushes high popularity as everyone related the King beating to Big Brother and those crazy white Republicans.

Ross Perot running for office was enough of a loss of votes to finish off Bush.
