Why are coaches so stupid?

St. Johns up 3 vs Georgetown with 2.3 seconds left. Gtown inbounding the ball. Too risky to foul with that little time left.

So, why aren't all 5 guys outside the arch defending only the 3?

UW vs USC couple years ago. USC up 3 with 2 seconds left.
Instead of putting all five outside the arch, Floyd covers all 4 on the floor and the inbounder. Hawes gets a screen and drills a 3.

How stupid can these guys be?

didn't watch the game, but i'm sure the coaches do say contest the 3pt shot at the end to prevent the win or OT. i bet each player on the team thought their other teammates would guard the 3 shot, but it's hard to guard when the other team is in-bounding the ball and they're running loops on the paint and the defender gets left in the dust because of a screen, and all you can do is pray the opposing player who broke loose to catch the inbound pass doesn't make it from downtown.

but if they started out with each player on the arc BEFORE the inbound pass and the opposing team just stays in the paint, that's bad management.

If you don't defend the inbounder, he has no pressure and can stand around (for five seconds) and have clear passing lanes to any guy who gets open.

You don't realize how much having a guy on the inbounder affects the play. Precise alterations on the inbound pass can change the shot dramatically.

Besides, they missed the 3 anyway, so apparently it wasn't such a "stupid" decision.

Based on that theory, than I guess you think that Minnesota is still better than Louisville. I mean they did beat them.

They got a good look at the shot it and it missed.

always said coaches cost teams more than the players. coaches also have way bigger ego's then the players.

not sure how that is anything similar to what i said.. there is no proof to your argument that says that its smarter to have 5 guys on the arc instead of a guy taking the inbounder

its irrational to say minnesota is better than louisville, and its perhaps even more irrational to try to use that in an analogy in this case...its the kind of thing you do when you're in 5th grade and having a screaming match with your friend.

agree 100%. bruce webber the other day decides to full court press michigan st. when they are only down 3 with 50 seconds left instead of just playing solid D. Mich. St. breakes the press easily for a layup and the foul parade is on. Illinois is not a full court press team...this situation called for playing solid half court defense.

I was wondering the WTF he was doing?

MSU can run and Illini can't press. Game over.
