Factoid. Using the Associated Press winner since 1990.

14 Quarterbacks and 6 RBs have won the League MVP (with a tie in 1997 you can add another RB and a tie in 2003 you can add another QB...Which virtually eliminates any Wide Receivers from competition. Only Jerry Rice in 1987, Lawrence Taylor in 1986 and Mark Mosley a kicker who shared a win in 1983 are the only non QB or RBs to ever win league MVP in the modern era. Chances of a defensive player winning are very low.

1990
• Joe Montana, QB - San Francisco (Associated Press)
1991
• Thurman Thomas, RB - Buffalo (Pro Football Writers Association of America, Associated Press, "The Sporting News")
1992
• Steve Young, QB - San Francisco (Pro Football Writers Association of America, Associated Press, Maxwell Club of Philadelphia, "The Sporting News")
1993
• Emmitt Smith, RB - Dallas (Pro Football Writers Association of America, Associated Press, Maxwell Club of Philadelphia, "The Sporting News")
1994
• Steve Young, QB - San Francisco (Pro Football Writers Association of America, Associated Press, Maxwell Club of Philadelphia, "The Sporting News")
1995
• Brett Favre, QB - Green Bay (Pro Football Writers Association of America, Associated Press, Maxwell Club of Philadelphia, "The Sporting News")
1996
• Brett Favre, QB - Green Bay (Pro Football Writers Association of America, Associated Press, Maxwell Club of Philadelphia, "The Sporting News")
1997
• Brett Favre, QB - Green Bay (Associated Press - tie with• Barry Sanders, RB)
1998
• Terrell Davis, RB - Denver (Pro Football Writers Association of America, Associated Press, "The Sporting News")
1999
• Kurt Warner, QB - St. Louis Rams (Associated Press, Pro Football Writers Association of America, Maxwell Club of Philadelphia)

Looking at Wil's list, the Field would be a very poor bet. The only player who really came from nowhere was Gannon.

Besides Taylor in 86 you have to go back to the early 70's to find a defensive player with Merlin Olsen in 74 and Alan Page in 71.

Regarding receivers you have to go back to 1963 when Lance Alworth was named. He only won on the United Press ballet:

1963 Lance Alworth, WR - San Diego (United Press).
