Since 1996, every Stanley Cup champion has finished among the top five in the regular-season standings.

http://proicehockey.about.com/b/2009/03/08/year-of-the-long-shot.htm

The last true underdogs to win the Cup were the 1995 New Jersey Devils, who finished 9th overall that year. That comes with an asterisk, because 1994-95 was an aberration in every way: a labor dispute shortened the regular season to 48 games.

The 1993 Montreal Canadiens are remembered as an unlikely champion. But they had 102 points that season, good for 6th place in a 24-team league. So it's not like they came out of nowhere.

Present top 5:
Boston 95
San Jose 94
Detroit 94
New Jersey 87
Washington 86

closing in
Calgary 84
Chicago 81 (games in hand)
Philadelphia 80 (games in hand)

I can see calgary making a deep run and obviously san jose and detroit and two teams that will be in the hunt.

out of the east i dont see philly competing for the cup as much as id like them to, i just think they have a few gaping holes which are going to limit their ability to win a 7 game series.

I'd take Detroit to win it again, but the best value betting wise
might be with some of the long shots. They would not have to
win every series to make it a profitable investment, as long as
it was hedged at that right time. Maybe Columbus +8050 at
Olympic {the Greek} sportsbook.

If I could make a bet on which conference will win the cup I would (Eastern Conference).

It all comes down to goal tending and there's two teams on that list (Boston and New Jersey) in better position than the rest.

I'm not going out on a limb at all but I think that Boston takes it.

Don't discount Vancouver. They were rolling until Luongo got hurt. They are rolling again.

i dont think boston has enough in them to win it all. too young yet, and you can see they are having issues lately.

They are suffering no more issues than all the teams with big leads in early March. Keep Fernandez off the ice and they will be fine.

Its because anyone in the East can go to the Cup. No clear cut favorite and dont say Boston because they havent won a playoff series in forever let alone go to the Finals. Also Tim Thomas has never won a playoff series in his life.

The wager was made with X-Files post in mind.
Steal a series and hedge away.
$20 to win $1600 gives you some leeway.

Columbus still at 80 to 1
As you seem to be the resident series hedge guy, what ya think?
They could finish 5th.....then play 4......not too long odds.
If lower then pray for a first round upset and then hegde?

Call me crazy but I will take Calgary to win the whole thing over Washington.

I can see Washington pulling a Pittsburgh of last year. Alex can win games and Series by himself. As for the Flames they are a playoff ready team, and will not have the preasure on them like San Jose and Detriot.

Calgary 12 to 1 odds right now
