I know it has been a foregone conclusion that he will probably sign with Cubs, but just read a story in St. Louis Post Dispatch that Maddux is also stongly considering the Cardinals,Dodgers, and Giants. If he were to sign with the Cardinals, I think their rotation would now be close to being up to speed with Cubs and Astros. Has anyone else heard anything?

From what I've heard, its 90% Cubs. Report is they upped their offer from 10-12 to 14-15 over 2 years. I think that's be an overpay but what the heck. Report is the Giants have been rejected. Also some reports say the Yanks may be interested, but Maddux doesn't really want to move to the AL. Cards just don't have the cash to offer and all else equal Maddux wants to pitch for the Cubs. I'm guessing rumors fly Wednesday as Boras meets again with Hendry, unofficial reports Thursday and a Friday press conf with Maddux reporting to Mesa on Monday. If the Cubs get Maddux they bring back last years near-WS team with these changes:
Derek Lee for Choi/Karros/Simon
Latroy Hawkins for Antonio Alfonseca
Greg Maddux for Shawn Estes
Michael Barrett for Damien Miller
Todd Walker and Todd Hollandsworth off the bench
and Aramis Ramirez for a full year.
Last year's 88 wins should be pushing 100. The Cards will fight to crack .500. Sorry.

Just heard on the radio that Maddux met face-to-face with Hendry today and wants to knock out a deal by Wednesday.

It was reported Fri or Sat by ESPN that Maddux is not interested in the Giants. Looks like the Cubs have got their man.

BTW, "pushing 100" to me means 95-100. You don't think the moves they made, if they get Maddux, is worth 7 to 12 more wins? I certainly do.

He won't sign with an American League team. There's too many hitters in that league that would feast on his meatballs. He likes the National League where he can have a Punch and Judy hitter in the eight spot and then the pitcher's spot. He still enjoys a rather generous strike zone in the National League. He would have to throw legitimate strikes in the American League and he would get lit up.

Maddux has had a fine career but he's finished. He wants a lot of money and he's really only an average pitcher at this point. Had he and Tom Glavine not had a strike zone a foot wider than the plate for most of their careers, each of them would have about 40 less wins.

SBob, I swear I was going to post the same thing about Maddux and the AL earlier, but something came up (EM I think) and I never got around to it. He wants no part of the AL and the DH, not to mention the umps. No question he wants to get that 300th win, and it would be nice to see him get it with the Cubs. IMO. when a guy wins 300 games in the big leagues he is special, wide strike zone or not. I do remember the Tom Glavine - Eric Gregg unders being so very sweet to bet. Greg Maddux has got the most out of his talent, and just may have enough left to put an almost there team like the Cubs (dare I say it) in the World Series.

wil, i live in chicago and all i can tell you is, if that season win total comes out over 95 wins i am going to the bank and taking out a loan on the under. you can bump this thread all year and put a little lightning bolt by it so all can see if i'm wrong.

all those pyramids and hotels you see in vegas were built with money people have bet on the cubs...futures and otherwise.

i will take the under and go against every time. please, oh please give me a cubs win total over 95...

lue, this is going to be a fun season. 95 is a bight tight for an O/U wins in that division, even with Maddux. I'll say it's 92.5. Would you tap U92.5, with Maddux on board?
