Strangly enough for a kid growing up in Boston my favorite player was Mickey Mantle and I actually rooted for the Yankees. One has to remember the Red Sox of the late 50's and early to mid 60's were terrible and hard to root for (especially for a kid yearning for a winner), Ted Williams was getting older and the Mick was the greatest in the American League back then. I didn't even consider NL players because I never got to see any on TV or at Fenway Park. I also got a Mickey Mantle bat when I was about 12 which sealed the deal.

I was at his last ever game as an Oriole, game 5 of 1996 playoffs vs New York...in his last atbat, he launched one last rocket over the left field wall....It was a happy moment for me even though Balto lost the series 4-1 on that sunday afternoon....I didn't really think much of it, til on the way home listening to John Miller do the recap on the radio, saying 'In what could be Murray's last atbat as an Oriole he homered'...gave me chills
