sorry he wasn't a dodger, but he did play for Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Angels, and technically he coudl be a relief pitcher since he did have four saves that year.

nothing is better than looking back at stats- those were not really that guady of the numbers but heck in 1977 it was a cy young performance

What stands out is the 13-5 record. That is unheard of for a closer today. Mainly because the game has changed, closers can only pick up a win if they blow a save at home, and then get taken off the hook in the bottom of the inning by their own team winning.

What i remember about Lyle winning...he edged out Jim Palmer, it would have been Palmer`s 4th Cy Young unprecidented at the time...Palmer again finished 2nd in 82 behind MIL pitcher Pete Vuckovich...It was Palmer`s last hurrah, I believe he went 15-5...losing on the last day of the 82 season to MIL and Don Suttton...If Balto. wins that season finale Palmer would have won the award that year....The season went to the last game that season...I was at that 4 game series and never was there ever more electricity at Memorial Stadium...Balto won the first 3 then lost the final game!
