College - San Jose State
ABA Teams: Indiana (1971-72 to 1975-76)

Born in Sacramento, California, Hillman spent two years in the Army after his sophomore year at San Jose State. Always among ABA leaders in blocked shots. Known as "Dr. Dunk," Pacers fans arrived early at home games to see Hillman's wide variety of warmup dunks. Came to Pacers as a virtual unknown despite being drafted in the first round of the ABA and NBA drafts. In 1971, led the Armed Forces All-Stars to the AAU title and was selected as MVP. After 1976 ABA-NBA merger, spent four years in the NBA, with Indiana, New Jersey, Denver, Kansas City and Golden State. Runaway winner of "ABA's Biggest Afro" Award at 1997 ABA Reunion.

From Jim O'Brien's 1972-73 Complete Handbook of Pro Basketball:
Prize catch for Pacers and ABA . . . 8th player selected in 1971 NBA Draft, by the San Francisco Warriors . . . High school teammate of Willie Wise at Balboa High School in San Francisco . . . Spent 1969-1971 in Army, where he was named MVP in World Military Games in summer of 1970 . . . An extremely strong rebounder, he's a tremendous jumper . . . Cleared 7 feet in high jump while in college . . . Showed vast improvement during his rookie season . . . Developed face up jump shot . . . Super leaper and if he gets the ball around the hoop it's all over . . . Very effective shot blocker on defense, but can be faked out of position . . . On team loaded with local, homegrown talent, Hillman, through his exciting and enthusiastic style, may possibly be the most popular Pacer . . . Coach Bob Leonard says of Hillman: "Darnell worked very hard last year and kept a great attitude. More than once, he came in to make the big play and give us a lift. He knows what defense is about and plays the best on our club."

The things Vince Carter has done are beyond comprehension. There have been some great dunkers, but no one compares to Vince. I think we have been spoiled to see so many of his highlights. If anyone else had just one dunk out of his top 25 they would be talked about for years.

Shawn Kemp was one of the best "in game" dunkers as well. He use to bash ON people.

please add ceballos

Ceballos was probably the most unathletic person to win a dunk contest. He was hardly a great dunker. I can't stand guys like him and Kenny Smith that won with gimmicks.

For me, the Doctor. Saw him dunk over The Big A, Artis Gilmore, when he was with the Virginia Squires, at a Kentucky Colonel game when I was around 10 or 11. And that was it for me. Freedom Hall went nuts, the opposing crowd.

Awesome Darnell Hillman flashback FW. The Pacers & Colonels had some great battles back in the day. Loved Hillman. Pacers always had great teams.

plus, after a dunk, kemp would hang on the rim with one hand and grab his sack with the other.

you can't beat that.

This is silly

My favorite of all time is none other than Anderson Hunt

I just loved that one handed dunk he did on the break to the side of the rim and his J was so nice. His D was so nice too. I wanted to be just like him.

Oh ya, how's that work'n out for ya? It didnt. But damn, I loved that one handed dunk from the side.

Macon went to Temple right? He looked just like a collie.

Yes. He was great his first couple of years at Temple too. 9th in the voting was Steve Smith who had a very nice career at Mich St and the pros.

The coach from Sacramento who just got popped for drunk driving has my vote as the NBA's greatest drunker. Sprewell could knock em down and did just that when he tried to choke the coach that one year. Drunkers both of them.

Shawn Kemp again is much better than both of these guys.

For "in game" dunkers, no one finished a break in traffic like Otis Thorpe.

Kemp would get my vote over Wilkins as the greatest power dunker....it's a shame he got fat and lazy.

Gotta give props to my all time favorite Clyde Drexler

drexler-8x10-rockets-thumb.jpg

Clyde was as fast as anyone in the league from end to end, and dribbled basically all with his right hand.
