As many have stated, it was clearly Michael Jackson for the longest time.

Until several of you mentioned it in this thread, I didn't think about the Obama.

With that being said, I would say the 5 most famous people living today are:

Obama
George Bush
Bin Laden
Michael Jordan
David Beckham

Couple of people mentioned the pope. While he is popular in Europe, N. America and South America, I don't think many in China/India and Africa know his name and that right there is about 50% of the world's population.

For those that are not familiar, American politics gets tremendous coverage in foreign newspapers throughout the world.

Catholic church is very big in Africa. But other than that, you're pretty much spot on.

The people in this thread are being way too narrow in their view of the world.

There are about 6 billion people in the world.

There are about a billion catholics in the world. So, the pope isn't a bad guess.

There are about a billion chinese in the world. Yao Ming isn't the worst guess in the world either.

But there are billions and billions (channeling by best Carl Sagan) who have never heard of either MJ or Tiger...

i would think Oprah would be up there, just for the length of time she's been around, and the charity she has done around the world...that gets her known in many of the underdeveloped countries....

I agree, it would be Michael still, just because he died, doesnt mean he's not known....

Obama of course any current president would be, but i'll be honest, i dont even know the pope's name right now....the "job" is well known, but i watch tv alot and stay current, but cant tell you which one he is.......is it even still the Polish one?

Tiger, I agree with. MJ you would be shocked.

Everyone in India knows who MJ, suprisingly.

dalai lama must be the most well known (in terms of number of ppl recognizing he exists) as you get the entire populations of india, china, and then much of the rest of the industrialized world.

I don't know of too many people who haven't heard of the Dalai Lama or the Pope except people in deepest, darkest Africa or some jungle somewhere.

Lots of people in Asia haven't heard of Oprah or Tiger.
