Honus. Shrink told me he was amazing, and he saw him play.

no way ripken should be on this list. the guy had a few good offensive years and was never a great defensive player. if it wasn't for the streak...no one would even talk about him.

robin yount was better.

that's funny, Cal wasn't a good efensive player...I don't care for Ripken really but he was a great fielder! Whatever hit his glove stayed in it, and he had a great and accurate arm....You won't understand Ripken's greatness unless you watched him daily....He wasn't a great hitter though...

This isn't even close, Honus Wagner is by far the greatest shortstop.

he didn't make errors...i'll give you that. but his range was nothing special. and that is the most important thing a shortstop can have.

take guys like ozzie smith and omar vizquel...they take away so many hits/year you could argue that their teams get 5-7 extra wins a season because of their defense.

i'd put ripken's defensive skills around the level of an a-rod...who was moved to third base...just like cal.

Cal led the league in assists and chances on several occasions...committed 3 errors for the whole season once, and holds the record for most consecutive games without an error at shortstop....I would never say Ripken is an Ozzie Smith or a Vizquel, but he was a much better hitter than those too...he never seemed to be a great hitter though, he was a much better fielder than most will realize....his brother Billy was an outstanding glove man as well...both with great hands....he did hit 431 homers with over 3000 hits and batted .340 at age 38, and was a two time MVP....I wouldn't put Yount ahead of him but its arguable either way..Yount played half his career in centerfield though.

This is the classic debate on how you measure greatness. Is greatness having a great run for a 8 year period or a good run for a 16 year period? Cal fits the latter. His longevity is what made him. He never put together a string of very good years. I was never a Cal Ripken fan. Take away his 2 best offensive seasons and you have a pretty good offensive player....nothing else. Jman does have a point though his defense was very underrated.

because someone doesnt make errors doesnt mean they are a good fielder..not saying ripken wasnt but that alone means nothing....if your getting to less balls, chances are you are going to make less errors...
