It doesn't make any difference if ther 162 games over .500. Once the playoffs start, its 0-0. Just ask Seattle 3 years ago or any of the recent Brave teams.

They are incredible...but a lot of teams in the past have shot their wads in the regular season only to have zippo left for the playoffs. We'll see how they do when it counts Willy.

As for Rolen:

As a life long and diehard REDBIRD fan, I can answer your question Wil.

Tony Larussa! That is the only guy who can keep the Cardinals out of the World Series. My biggest fear is that this great regular season has saved his job. The man is just one of the worst situational manager I have ever seen. Fire him and bring back WHITEY!!!

Who said anything about the playoffs?

Seriously, I understand that it's a new season once the playoffs start, say it was the Yanks that were 48 games over, the whole world would be conceding the WS.

Tony LaRussa is not a great playoff manager. These Cards have the look of the A's of the late 80's; a bunch of stud hitters and some decent pitchers who look much better than they are thanks to their support. They're a definite bet-against in the playoffs.

the A's had Welch, Moore, Stewart,Sanderson, Storm Davis... Eckersley and Honeycutt and Gene Nelson...pretty nice staff IMO (in 1989 they came within 5 wins of having 4 -20 game winners)

...Larussa also had a nice staff back at Chi...Hoyt, Bannister, Dotson, Burns...

They do everything well, but just not the absolute best at anything. The Yankees that won 114 games were like this team, really no weaknesses. You can certainly try to say they won't get it done, but really hard to pick someone else out who can win 2-1 games just as easily as 8-7 games like this team can.

Glad you brought up the '83 White Sox J-man. That team, with 99 wins and the best record in baseball, also went down in the playoffs; 3-1 to the Orioles. As far as the A's staff, as a die-hard Mariner fan I can tell you that Mike Moore and Rick Honeycutt were good, but not great pitchers. Neither was Dave Stewart, who toiled for years with the Dodgers, until all three joined the A's and, with all that support, magically turned into studs.

Dave Stewart had quite a 4 year run with the A's. In 1989 Stewart's 100th career victory made him the only pitcher of the 1980s with three consecutive 20-win seasons. He won two games in both the LCS and the World Series that year, the only man ever to do so, and was the WS MVP. He also won 22 games in 1990. Stewart was 8-0 lifetime in ALCS play.

i'm not sold on this pitching staff no matter how good it looks right now. but, i will say this though. you can't out score the cardnails at all.

this lineup is the best lineup i've seen in a long time. I mean who are you going to pitch around if need be.

as far as larusa goes. well it's the last year of his contract and it always seems like both players and managers shine when the money is on the line for that new contract.

but, i think what would scare me the most for most cardnails fans is that they are peaking at the wrong time.

I agree Belch One...to a certain extent with what you are saying...When I think of the Cards , other than Matt Morris the staff doesn't jump out at you...

As far as Oakland goes winning only 1 of 3 WS...I think it was more a matter of bad luck, Cincy was a TEAM and deserved their WS over the A's....As far as LA goes that would happen 5 out of 100 times...

The A's had a great run, Stewart was a great big game pitcher , he just blossomed with Oakland, Bob Welch was good before coming to Oakland , Moore was good with Seattle and better with Oakland, Storm Davis probably benefited the most coming to the A's...and the pen was incredible!

The ChiSox did get beat by a very good Balto team in '83 (close series) who would have won well over 100 games had it not been for clinching 2 weeks early (winning 98)

I am not disagreeing with your reasoning that the Cards could be had in a tightly picthed WS or Playoff...not many teams this year have that great starting pitching, especially in the NL.

Yes, I believe the Cardinals are as much of a lock as the Lakers and Smarty Jones winning the Triple Crown, lol...

red sox have best record in baseball since trade deadline (26-9). .they also had the best record in baseball before nomar returned to the lineup in may. .take away nomar and theyve been the best all season. .it wouldnt mean anything if they didnt have a winning record vs. new york.

still, the yanks have the division to lose up 2.5

i dont think the cards are doing much with that shoddy pitching staff in the post season it is very much like that mariner team that broke the record in wins, in that they have a terrefic offense and defesne with slighty above mediocre picthing.
