Anyone here had success with on line poker?
What sites do you play?
How long have you been successful, etc?
Any info is greatly appreciated.

Read a book or two and you are on your way to making some money online. Winning low-limit hold em by Lee Jones is a great book to start with. With that knowledge and a bit of experience, you can make some coin by playing in low-limit games online. I play all over the place, but shy away from Poker Stars or Ultimate bet because they actually have decent players on those sites.

I started about a year and a half ago and make some spending money every month. If you are disciplined and know understand the basics you are better than 70% of the people playing online.

I have played at Party Poker and continue to lose (eventually). I honestly don't believe it has anything to do with my skills, but rather the unrealistic cards. Maybe that's what all losers claim but it just doesn't happen in real life like at PP.

You can go through some big swings at Party since there is so much chasing. If you stay disciplined though, you have a positive expectation in the long run. I strongly suggest reading "Winning low-limit hold em" by Lee Jones or "Internet Texas Hold 'em" by Matthew Hilger. Super System is a great book, but covers a lot more than you need especially if you're just starting.

I have lost aot of money at PP the last 6-8 weeks. Yet I have been playing in several games and tournaments locally and have fared very well. Something isnt making sense.

Well first of all, there are certain irregularities in the software of online poker. You will see MANY MORE FULL houses and 4 of a kinds in online poker. You need to ALWAYS be aware of that when you play and you suspect that you have the "nuts", but actually lose to 4 or a full house.

Another difference between live and online, is that you can pretty much bank on that flush hitting after seeing 2 hit the board at least 2 times more than in live play.

I have had good success playing online. But I have lost $300-600 in a night as well. My best win was $12,000 in a tournament at poker stars. The buy in was $200 for this event though, so dont think that the win came cheaply. Since then, I have made the final table in smaller events quite a bit, but nothing that time. Other first prize winning amounts have only been $1000 and $750. It has been fun, but except for a few big wins, it hasnt been real profitable. I am up a nice amount, but without the tournament play, I would not be up so much

The higher the stakes online, the weaker the players generally

(This does not apply to B&M games)

Buck is right on this one! I have MUCH better luck at the $200NL buy in table than I do at the $50NL buy in table.

I find this descrepancy comes from newbies with lots of CASH TO BURN start online after watching on TV. These guys dont think much about losing $200-500 in a weekend playing while trying to LEARN THE ONLINE GAME! ANd dont get me wrong, the online game is TOTALLY different play than on TV or live play

1. Read a few good books. My top three are Theory of Poker (Sklansky), Hold Em Poker for Advanced Players (Sklansky), Winning Low Limit Hold Em (Jones).

2. Buy Turbo Texas Hold Em. This is a great learning tool if taken seriously. Costs about $90 or so. Practice and study the game.

3. Sign up for a rake back program. These are legit and will give you money back from all raked hands. It is a nice bonus if you intend to play a lot.

4. Buy PokerTracker and begin tracking the limits you want to play. Use this program every time you play. A solid edge. It also tracks your play very well and will tell you where your game is weak.

5. Join PartyPoker and work your way to being able to multi-table 4 games of 3-6 limit texas hold em. Shoot for an average of say 1.5 - 2 big bets per hour. Thats $12 per hour PER TABLE.

6. Join the forums at twoplustwo.com and continue to refine your game all the time.

$36 to $48 per hour is doable if you are serious, have a decent bankroll to support the swings, and are somewhat skillful. It is not fun. If it is, you are doing something wrong. It is seriously a grind, and you need to be alert and not chase. Using PokerTracker, you can find the best (soft) games, and grind out a profit.

yup. like not folding enough and chasing hands that arent going to happen. good post.

i think bluffing is generally a bad idea in fixed limit. .am i wrong here?

another key to making good ROI, is playing gauranteed money tournaments where the people who enetered dont make up for the money being paid out which in effect is like a bonus

the higher limit tables are much easier to win. the people have money to lose and are easy to spot. lower limit tables have what i envision to be crusty old penny pinching geesers who are sharper than nails. they work extra extra hard to make their money and its well deserved for their impecable play. these guys are on there 24/7 from the way they chat... betting their $2 dollars a hand.

the good news for you is that the higher limit tables are a bit more free wheeling and you can make a killing if you are patient. guys who wanna make a quick buck with money to burn come and go. be patient, ID them and wait for their brashness and mistakes.
