Ok, need some advice, I had my first kidney stone and last Wednesday went in and had the stone broken up by a process were the knock you out and ultra sound the stone and break it into many many tiny pieces so you can pass it much easier. The process was painless and I actually have started to pass the sand like stones. You know you are passing them by pissing into a strainer and can see the sand like particales.

Here is my question to you who may have had this done? How long does the pain continue from them pounding the kidney with ultra sound waves. The pain is still pretty brutal. I'am not a big pain killer guy, but I should have now that this was not going to be easy when the Doctor gave me a prescription for 25 vicodin. The problem is hard to take those when you have to work, and drive 45 miles to work.

Any experience with this would be appreciated.

I' ve had them twice. First time they went in thru the out hole and pulled the stones out. The stint that they placed in there for a week was the most pain I felt. The second time they did the ultra sound procedure. The pain lasted 10 days or so. You'll just have to suck it up. I feel for you bros.

u are working with kidney stones passing! WOW

I was cramped up in a ball, throwing up, thinking I was going to die after about 12 hours of this I got help at the hospital as I did not know what was wrong.........how can you possibly be driving and working???

After I got to the ER room (as I did not know what was happening) and I got the diagnosis of a kidney stone (I did not really know what that was Ithought they were going to open me up and operate and the Dr. says no it just passes, Im like wtf passes????)..anyway a pain killer shot helped a bunch, also knowing I was not dying helped as well.....for me it was another 10-12 hours or so and then it was over... once they drop in the bladder the pain is over..the peeing them out you dont feel a thing that is not the painful part...its passing through the tiny uretha tubes that hurts and they move slowly especially if there are a few ot them..best thing is to take the pain killers and lay in a warm tub all day....and GOD does that still hurt...

i feel your pain. I have had a few. Like Hal said, the stint is the worst pain. when they take that out its like peeing blood. i passed out.

and yes i was rolling around in my barf too when i first had one and didnt know what it was (even tho it runs in the family)

it is most likely diet related. I have switched my diet and havent had anything major in probably 10 years. You should investigate the cause and make changes.

Try and Tesco....They found the stone because I was peeing blood. I had a stone that was a 9 Which was to big to pass, so the Ultra Sounded it and broke it up into tiny pieces most I cannot see. No stint they broke it up so small.

It has been brutal, and I took off today, and talked to the doctor and he said I probably did to much..Understand i'am upper management so I do not really do that much. But they said take it easy for a few more days and things should get better. I said why not tell me that from the start instead of saying I could go back to work in 48 hours!

I have been able to recover a few sand like pieces which they will send to the lab and find out what caused them

It was probably the most pain i have been in my life. I actually was on my hands/knees crawling on the floor & doubled up like a baby when i laid on the bed. All i can remember is that i drank as much water as i could so as to urinate as much as possible to flush out my kidneys.I watched my urine to see if any small particles were in my urine as iurinated. I took no pain meds & suffered like i don't know what.I had my last attack [have had about 3-4 attacks in my life] about 5 years ago as i am now 71yrs old & hope to hell that i don't have anymore,gl.

be glad no stint. They put me in stirrups (like obgyn style) and went up the pee hole to go get it. worse pain ever as you are awake for it.

mine were calcium deposits which sucked so i cut dairy out of my life and havent had any major problems in last 15 years. think maybe i passed 2 on my own but nothing worse than minor discomfort.
i know cola, nuts, tea and coffee seem to get most people that i know.

good luck buddy. you will prob need the week off.

likely to have more than one, later if not now. do a google on it as there are better ways to prevent and help break them up.
If you dont change, you will get them again.

never had them and hopefully never will I try to eat better and drink alot of liquids but I love choclate

If you have more than one kidney stone, especially if you have a family history of stones, you are more likely to have kidney stones again. But you can take steps to help prevent them:

  • Drink more fluids. Try to drink enough water to keep your urine clear, about 8 to 10 glasses of water per day. Slowly increase how much you drink, perhaps adding one more glass of water a day until you are drinking 8 to 10 glasses a day. This slow increase will give your body time to adjust to the extra fluids. You are drinking enough water when your urine is clear or light yellow. If it is dark yellow, you are not drinking enough fluids. If you have kidney, heart, or liver disease and have fluid restrictions, talk with your doctor before increasing how much you drink.
  • Change your diet. This may be helpful, but it depends on what is causing your kidney stones. Your doctor may do more tests before deciding whether changing your diet will help reduce your risk of developing another stone. The results of these tests may suggest that it could be helpful to do one or more of the following:
    • Increasing how much fiber you eat. Fiber includes oat bran, beans, whole wheat breads, wheat cereals, cabbage, and carrots.
    • Eating less beef, pork, and poultry.
    • Eating a moderate or high amount of calcium-rich foods, such as dairy products. Getting your recommended amounts of calcium, combined with a diet low in sodium and protein, may decrease your risk of kidney stones.7 In older people and younger women, one study indicates that eating more calcium-rich foods reduces the risk of kidney stones.8
    • Avoiding foods that are high in oxalate, such as dark green vegetables, nuts, and chocolate.
    • Not adding salt when you cook or eat. Try removing the salt shaker from your table.

Its the mail version of giving birth..they say stress brings it on..well at least in the offshore gambling business we live in a stress free environment so we dont have to worry about these trivialities..

Had 'em once.
Pain was so unbearable I had to go to the emergency room.
Doctor gave me a strainer to catch the stone as it went through the opening.
I wouldn't wish that on my arch enemy.

G. Money

I had my first kidney stone last summer followed by 3 more in the span of one month. It started with excruiating pain in my upper groin area and I rushed to the Emergency Hospital where it was diagnosed as 1 stone. They did not do an ultrasound but rather gave me pain killers in the ER such as morphine which they cannot prescribe of course. I was there for hours and then released like you with Vicodin, which I decided not to take, and just bear out the pain. I was also scheduled for an appointment with a urologist to bring the stone(s) in once passed with through urination.

Now, here is an explanation of what you are likely experiencing as the stone grains are being caught in the strainer. When they broke up the stone, it is not down to the size of grains, but rather smaller stones. My first one was the size of a kernel of corn and others got as large as a good size rat dropping. The pain you are feeling is because the stones are stuck in the ureter, which is a very small tube between the kidney and the bladder. Once the stone(s) move out of the ureter and into the bladder, you won't feel the pain anymore. It took me a few days for the pain to let up. Once the stones are in the bladder, they will ultimately pass with your urine. It will not be painful. They will just pop out.

As to the cause of the stones, when they are examined, your urologist will explain the type of stone(s) it was. There are three types. The first is calcium oxalate stones. These are caused by high-calcium foods (diary products) and calcium or vitamin C supplements. Limit high-oxalate foods (such as cola, tea, chocalate and peanuts. The color of the stone is black. The second type, which I have, is uric acid stones. These are caused by high purine foods such as anchovies, poulty, and organ meats. These foods increase uric acid production. I am now on medication (Urocit-K) three times a day and haven't had another stone since on the medication. The color of the stone is brown/yellow. The third type is cystine stones. These are caused by high-methionine foods (fish is the most common) These foods increase your production of cystine. Since my diet consists almost exclusively of poultry and salmon, my stones may have had a little of this as well. I am not sure the color of these type of stones.

I hope this provides you with some helpful information although doesn't eliminate the current pain. Only time will do that as they pass. For those who have never had kidney stones, the medical profession likens the pain to be as severe as when a woman gives birth.

old friend i grew up with had them like 3 times in his late teens early 20's. Said it was hell passing them. I remember after the 1st time he showed it to us. it was just this tiny little thing, i don't think it was bigger than a ball point in a Bic pen, but he said it was some of the most excruciating pain he ever had.
I've heard stories from other people also.
Fortunately i've never had them.
