I know the program is for the diehard but then again you only get out of the program what you put into it. Im sure you can downplay your intensity to just "stay in shape" but I am going to tell you what is going to happen.

After about 3 weeks you are going to start feeling GREAT and getting compliments about how you look. Suddenly you start to work a bit harder each workout and before you know it Men's Fitness is calling you up for a photo shoot.

Good luck in whatever you find.

Couple comments quick...

Agree on the P90x program but it is NOT a bulk up program. If you are fat, it will work wonders or have muscle already. It's more of a leaning out program. That said, I've gone through it and it's great. Killer but like anything else, you get what you put into it.

If you are thinking about joining a gym, work out at home for a couple months first and make sure you are going to stick with it. The guy above said he hasn't gone in 3 months, why waste the money. I work out at home because it's easier and I can do it with the kids home (I have little kids). That and I can work out whenever I want and not have to put up with the meat heads (but I miss out on some of the ladies).

Just do something though, even if you start off slow before you invest the money. My 2 cents

I don't think you need to join a gym. Unless you are trying to gain serious muscle mass, which I assume you aren't, you can get where you want to be without joining. Getting in shape is a lot of what you eat. Get your diet right, jog a little either on a treadmill at home, or outside, and maybe some push ups and sit ups and your fine. A healthy diet is basically all you need. Without eating properly the gym is pointless.

You might be right. Some treadmill and light weights should do the job.

I waste the money because I have mine and another person's 12-month contract hooked to my bank account. The other bastard is broke so I'm paying his even though he doesn't go and then I've been hiking and in the woods with the girlfriend the last month. Exercising, just haven't had gym time.

I've been going to the same gym for years. It's like a second home to me. Aside from being in an atmosphere where you can feed off the energy and be motivated to work out, you can make some good buddies and have a lot of fun. It's my sanctuary.

You should check out a few different gyms and take advantage of a free trial that most of the places offer and see which one you feel most comfortable at.

I spend 30 bucks a month for a great gym that I use 5-6 days a week. I mostly stick to the treadmill and benches/free weights, but they also have a lot of machines and cardio equipment. Plus they have a sauna and pool. For just a dollar a day, it is money well spent at least for my lifestyle.

Diet is key though, if you are planning on getting results you need to eat a lot of protein, healthy fats, and low carbs/sugars. Also I would not sign up at a gym with a high initiation fee or one that locks you into a contract you can't get out of in case you decide it is not for you. The gym I go to had neither.

Pull up bar needed for P90x but you don't need the push up bars (you can use dumbells and/or not use them at all, I don't).

Download the p90x program all over the place too, no need to pay for it.

I used to go to La Fitness. It was ok but then it became dirty(locker room smell)

Some of my friends go to Equinox which I hear is pricey. But they say its nice.

I bought equipment for my house Treadmill, elliptical, bike.

Brands fitness has good prices I thinks it in Wantagh (sunrise Highway). Their service is good if something needs fixing.

Hope that helps!

Good Luck!

Think it would probably be the best investment you could make unless you have tom orrow's newspaper.Joined one about nine years ago thinking i might go twice a week. It is like running if you like running. It is very addictive, besides making you feel better and being in a lot better shape. You feel like you are cheating yourself if you don't go and you feel like you just threw away the money. I started out with a trainer twice a week and on the third day repeated his exercises. After three months i started doing it myself. Really helps if you have a workout buddy.Missed two weeks when i had some surgery and though i was going into denial/.
