I would define a public team as one that is consistantly overvalued because of public perception and/or popularity. We all know the Yanks and Cubs are two of the most consistantly overpriced public teams. I would also think that Boston and Atlanta are public teams, to a lesser extent. But what about: LA Dodgers, LA Angeles, Mets? Are those "public" teams? Does anyone know?

I think you nailed the top 2 public team on the head. It drops off tremendously after that.

St Louis would be next on the list. Even though the Cards have been overvalued in a traditional line sense, they have not cost people backing them because of there tremendous success.

The Cards remind me of the Patroits and the Eagles in football last season. The lines were inflated but they kept covering week after week not matter what.

Great post, I totally forgot about the Cards. They have legions of fans.

Totally agree fellas, plus when hot and healthy the Braves and Giants are "public", also when having good teams LAD, NYM, CWS, Clev, and Philly get $upport.

I agree with the list!! And I think every year there's a team or two that becomes a "public" team due to their success like CWS or O's.

You guys are right on the money. As far as being overbet in 2005, I would add the Florida Marlins. Their rotation was so hot in April and May, that their lines were inflated game after game. The team has produced only a 34-34 record, despite being favored 53 times in 68 games. They have lost 24 times when favored (29-24). Ouch.

Cards as always are seeing heavy betting action this year along with Halladay of the Jays. "My" top two 1. Cards 2. W. Sox. Not as much on the 3. Bosox and 4. Yanks compared to previous years. You may want to put the Angels in the top five. Wash has become "public" believe it or not.
