What in the world is wrong with the Bengals? Easy answer, Marvin Lewis is wrong with the Bengals. You can try all you want to put the blame on Carson Palmer, the offensive line, the defense, the banged up receivers, but the fact of the matter is that the Bengals aren’t just not winning. The Bengals aren’t even showing up mentally and emotionally. The Bengals quit on Marvin Lewis a long time ago and it didn’t help that ownership decided to bring back Chris Henry after Lewis dismissed him just a few weeks earlier. What is that supposed to say to the players? It says that the ownership does not trust Lewis’ decision making and, quite frankly, they don’t think he will be around much longer. Cincinnati has responded by going through the motions the past two games waiting for Lewis to disappear from the sideline.
We are all waiting for the Bengals to return to normal form. Because no matter how you slice it Carson Palmer is not a quarterback who is going to go out their and consistently have a QB rating under 50. TJ Houshmanzadeh and Chad Johnson are not wide receivers who are going to go out there and be covered every down. This offense is eventually going to get back on track and I think they are going to give Bengal fans some glimmers of hope this Sunday. The Giants should be getting some very good pressure all game but they just don’t have the cover guys to cover these receivers. If Palmer can take a quick 3-step drop, load, and fire then the Bengals can have some success.
I believe Lewis is going to completely scrap the game plan that had given this offense success in the past and is going to make this a very simple offense. They are going to cut down on the running game because 40 carries in Chris Perry is averaging just 2.5 yards per carry which is just hindering this offense. Then they are going to try to have Palmer drop and fire very quick behind a weak offensive line for some 7 yard gains, 6 yard gains, maybe some long catch and runs. Lewis is essentially playing for his job as the Bengals are desperate for a win. Now, don’t misinterpret this for me thinking the Bengals put up 30 points and win this game outright. I just feel like the Bengals may find the end zone twice in this one which isn’t much to ask. If the Bengals can squeeze out say, 17 points all we need the Giants to do is hit 25 to push the over.
The Giants put up 41 vs. the Rams and should have put up 34 vs. the Skins but failed to finish some drives. This offense is going to steamroll a very weak Bengals defense. Expect a lot of 6 yard runs from the Giants and some deep balls to Plaxico Burress who outclasses every cornerback on the Bengal roster. Both of the Bengals starting cornerbacks measure up to 5 feet 11 inches on a good day and the nickel and dime corners are just 6’0. How are they going to out-jump a 6’6 Plaxico Burress? Expect a lot of jump balls much like Plaxico has done to the small Eagles corners every time they have played since he has come to the Giants.
The Giants should also get a few turnovers leaving them in good field position to get into the end zone. I feel like the over in this game is a great play.
