Aqueduct will likely be closing soon...There is serious talk about turning the track area into a convention center/casino. Track handles across the country have dropped 10.5% this last year causing purses to drop as well. This has been an on-going trend at the track since 2006. Horse racing is in a major predicament as of late, thus the lowering of the wagering minimums. $1 Exacta's, .50 Trifecta's and .10 Superfecta's now are more popular than ever...

The Wolf one of the best most legit places to play horses is at twinSpires, actually owned and operated through Churchill Downs

Ahh, Bernie.... If you're going to read a Article in the Newspaper or hear someone talking about a convention center/casino at Aqueduct. You Need to Read through the Whole Story.

Aqueduct Just got their First Casino ( really called a Racino ) because it's only Video Slot Machines. a couple of Months ago. They are making HUGE Money !
And there are NO plans on Closing up. They now have a Total of Over 4500 Slot type machines and 475 Video Table game machines.
Matter of Fact, they want to Expand .....

Not sure if you know, But NY is Also trying to change the Laws about having "Real" Casinos in NY.

Gov. Cuomo has said he will call on the Legislature in 2012 to make the first of two needed approvals of a constitutional amendment to legalize casino gambling, which would then require a referendum, no earlier than 2013, before it becomes law.

Anyway Back to the main Subject.............

Resorts World, a The Genting Group Company that Runs the Casino with New York wants to Pay and Build the Largest convention center in North America.
In turn, they would have First Shot on Running a Real casino if the Laws are Passed in NY.

Guessing that you have never been to Aqueduct. There is So Much land in and Around there. They could Build a mini Vegas there with Room to Spare.

So Aqueduct Racetrack would Not Close at All. NYRA is Finally getting the financial help they need.

I didn't realize that NY doesn't have casinos.

Meanwhile, Michigan wants to build 9-11 more.

the grand plan is to winterize belmont and take land that is aqueduct racetrack and backstretch w/the remaining barns still there and build the convention center on that piece of property....thus making belmont year round w/the exception of the 5 week spa meet....it's all talk til something actually happens...so we'll see...i wouldn't start making any grand plans just yet...i mean, it took all the bullshit to clear to get that racino up in just under what?.. 11 years?.....as for racing itself crumbling?...well ask around and you will get many thoughts on the subject..if ny racing was run by one governing body controlling all the racing and wagering, i doubt this would even be a topic for discussion...but since there are so many back rubs(with happy endings!)back alley-handshakes, and dirty hands in the cookie jar..ny racing will never be on solid ground.... and i can only speak for ny racing no other jurisdiction, let it be known...cheers

A little Shocked that you would say this Cocktails..... Being that I know you are a Horse Owner and all.
According to John Sabini there are No Plans at this time to Close Aqueduct if they Build a convention center.
The Last Talk of closing Aqueduct was back in 2008 when, Just about Word for Word what you posted. the Plan was to sell off the BigA, sell the 192acres of land and Get Belmont the Racino. Nassau County Turned all this Down and then the Plan changed to Aqueduct.

My Point is, that was Old News.... and that Plan was Dumped a couple of years ago.

wondering why you think this is shocking?...haven't stated anything that most in the industry don't know already....i realize it was dumped 4 years ago...but with cuomo coming into power and asserting his ways this really isn't a pipe dream anymore...but like i said previously, when i see it i will believe it...just spent most of the afternoon and evening at yonkers...now i am not a trotters guy, but that place was packed to the rafters tonite...and to think that aqueduct has put a 20% dent into their business is mind boggling...3 of us showed up at 4pm today and had to park nearly half a mile away to the front door..left at 3:15am and the place was still slamming....

And the purses are Up across the board... So if it worked for Yonkers, why would they seek to close the BigA ?

Cuomo is about Helping NYS and the Dying NY Horse Industry.

The argument is Not that it Was Known through out the Industry. But that it is Known ( meaning currently ) Today. That they are Closing the BigA

because it is Not Currently Known Today that their Plans are to Close Aqueduct.

Ok, So my Misunderstanding on a post a few back then.
Because Bernie thought you agreed that it is Known at this time.

Anyway. Yes there are Still Problems with all 3 tracks. 100% agree.
I would say it is the Money Bleeding NYRA that is the Major Problem. It has been for some time now.

Would Love to see Cuomo Replace a few Pieces there, or just start up something New.

I didn't realize that NY doesn't have casinos.

I was at "Turning Stone" around 15 years ago. It is/was a fairly large casino located near Utica. I believe it's affiliated with a native American tribe. At the time, they didn't have a race book or a liquor license. Not sure if that's changed. We wanted to have some beers and bet races so we ended up at the Comfort Inn overlooking Vernon Downs (minor league harness track about 5 miles away).

nothing is known at this moment...but it is the very strong rumor that emanates around racing circles in ny right now...i have very strong feelings about the ny racing industry(most of them severely skewed toward the negative)and also have ideas that i relay to people all the time..no one listens...but i keep chirping...maybe one day the right person will take a shot on doing something logical....maybe i will map out a plan and print it here...seems to be way more open minded people on this site than most of the ignorant species i run into at nyra
