2016 NCAA Men's Frozen Four field set: 4 things to know.

Following a thrilling weekend of regional action, the field for the 2016 Men's Frozen Four in Tampa is set. North Dakota, Boston College, Denver and Quinnipiac will be packing their sunscreen for the trip to Amalie Arena, home of the Tampa Bay Lightning, April 7-9.

The first semifinal will feature Boston College vs. Quinnipiac, with North Dakota taking on conference rival Denver in the nightcap.
North Dakota cruised past Northeastern, the nation's hottest team heading into the tournament, and Michigan, which boasted the most productive line in college hockey and likely Hobey Baker winner Kyle Connor.

Boston College took down the Jimmy Vesey-led Harvard Crimsen and survived a late scare against Minnesota Duluth to punch their tickets to Florida.
The Denver Pioneers scored 13 goals over their two games, securing a 7-2 blowout win over Boston University. They also pulled away late in the regional final to top Ferris State 6-3.

No. 1 overall seed Quinnipiac earned their way back to the Frozen Four by shutting out RIT and skating past UMass-Lowell in the regional final.

1. Boston College is headed to its 25th Frozen Four.

No team in the history of college hockey has made it to as many Frozen Fours as the Eagles. In a year where Boston College's football and men's basketball teams couldn't manage a single win in conference play, the hockey team was as reliable as ever.

The Eagles have played in 11 of the last 16 Frozen Fours and will be seeking their fourth national title since 2008. Led by head coach Jerry York, who eclipsed 1,000 career wins earlier this season, the Eagles have a lot of veterans that will be hungry for a title. The Eagles last won in 2012, led by then-freshman Johnny Gaudreau.

This year, goaltender Thatcher Demko has been the team's best player. The Vancouver Canucks prospect has been one of the best goalies in the entire country with a .936 save percentage. He's going to get a lot of help, though.

BC, as usual, is loaded with pro prospects, including Ottawa Senators first-round pick Colin White, who has 42 points in 36 games as a freshman. He and Demko are included among the Eagles' 12 NHL draft picks on the roster.

2. North Dakota is back in the Frozen Four for the third straight year, this time with a new coach.

When it was announced that head coach Dave Hakstol was going to leave North Dakota for the Philadelphia Flyers, it was a big shock, but UND's succession plan was already in place. Assistant coach Brad Berry stepped right into the role as the head coach and helped the Fighting Hawks grow into one of the nation's most complete teams.

Hakstol got North Dakota to the Frozen Four in seven of his 11 seasons behind the bench. They never won a national title in those seven trips and only reached the final only once, back in 2005. That year, they lost to the Denver Pioneers, who they'll meet in the semifinal this year, in the championship game.
So with Berry running the bench, will things be different? He was an assistant in each of the last two trips to the Frozen Four and was the associate coach when they reached the national championship game in 2005.

I thought the Fighting Hawks played the best hockey of any team in the tournament. Led by the CBS line that features Canucks first-round Brock Boeser, Chicago Blackhawks first-rounder Nick Schmaltz and senior Drake Caggiula, a top college free agent, this team can score in bunches. They also are really tough to generate offense against with a veteran defense led by Troy Stecher, another top college free agent, Los Angeles Kings prospect Paul LaDue and San Jose Sharks prospect Gage Ausmus. Then there's goalie Cam Johnson, who has a sparkling .934 save percentage. There are many layers to team.

This is the first year Berry has been a head coach, so we'll have to see if he has the magic touch to get his alma mater over the hump and win their first title since 2000.

3. Quinnipiac is back in the Frozen Four after reaching the final in 2013.

The No. 1 overall seed didn't have much trouble making it out of their regional, but they haven't had much trouble all year. After winning both the ECAC regular-season and tournament championships for the first time in school history, they'll seek the one piece of hardware that has eluded them so far.

After posting a 31-3-7 record to date, Quinnipiac will go back to the Frozen Four for just the second time in school history. Their last trip came in 2013 when the Bobcats reached the national championship game, but lost to ECAC and Connecticut rival Yale in a 4-0 shutout.

One of the big questions heading into the national tournament was the health of top-scorer Sam Anas. He ended up suiting up in both tournament games, even though he was a game-time decision for both. If there were any ill effects from the apparent shoulder injury he carried into the tournament, they were not evident on this goal, which stood as the game-winner in the regional final:

Now Anas gets two weeks to rest up and prepare for a tough Boston College squad. He'll be joined by veteran goal Michael Garteig and a veteran cast to try and bring the first national title to QU.

4. Denver returns to the Frozen Four for the first time in 11 years on an 18-2-2 run.

The Denver Pioneers have been rolling after enduring a six-game winless streak that lasted all of December. They have won 18 of their last 22 games including 13 of their last 15 games. That December winless streak actually started in a two-game series against North Dakota. However, Denver ended up making up for it by sweeping UND on home ice back in mid-February. They tied the Fighting Hawks in the NCHC third-place game just last week.

Jim Montgomery, who was part of the historic 1992-93 University of Maine team that won a national title, will lead DU into the Frozen Four for the first time since he took over the bench in 2013-14. He won two USHL titles with the Dubuque Fighting Saints prior to making the jump to Denver.

Denver hasn't been back to the Frozen Four at all since it won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005. No school has managed to win back-to-back titles since then.

Led by super sophomore Danton Heinen, a draft choice of the Boston Bruins, Denver sure knows how to put the puck in the net. The team is averaging 3.3 goals per game and have a goal differential of plus-40.

Heinen is leading the team with 48 points, but freshman Dylan Gambrell is right behind him with 47, with junior Trevor Moore accounting for 44. The trio, known more commonly as the “Pacific Rim Line” with all three hailing from western locales (British Columbia, Washington and California), has been outstanding all year long.

This quartet of teams all have a lot of firepower and there will be no shortage of strong NHL prospects on display. It's going to be an absolutely stellar finish to the college hockey season.
