I don't think they're that big up north, but you should already know what frats are good at your school before you rush.

You summed it up pretty well actually. They are so pathetic too. They basically poor beer down girls throats' just so they can get laid.

Thats also a pretty good way to put it...True story, a few buddies of mine a few years back would go around to different frat parties, cause problems, pull the fire extinguisher out and fill the place with smoke, then bounce...

frats are pretty much guys with no friends coming to school and decide to join up as a team of losers to recruit under age girls to come over to their dump of a house to drink cheap beer and try to get laid, if the frat man is called out he can not fight one on one cuz that is not brotherly so he has to find 40 other members to get his back.. frats are a joke.. no self esteem scrubs=FRATS.. lot of the fratters like to do roids to try to make themselves tough.. used to deal with these nerds on a daily basis when worked at a bar in college.

How is it a poor man's excuse? You pay to hang out with people and belong to a group. If you dont pay, then you are excluded.

Please elaborate, maybe I'm offbase here.

From what I've seen, it is essentially buying your way into the "Good Ole boys club". The extent of it depends entirely on the school\city, but they can be a damn good foot in the door for job opps.

if you make a decision on a frat from this message board you are a fool.

the whole point in "rush" is to pick and choose.

one fraternity at one school is a far cry from the same one at a different school.

you go to try them out first - meet the guys, figure your shit out.

please don't think you will be any better off if some guy had a great experience with such and such fraternity at such and such school in random town, USA and that will translate into the same for you.

if you make decision about who to pledge to from random people you will eventually find yourself fucked during week 3 when all those great things aren't coming true. if you want legit advice get it from someone who graduated - to be super honest...get it from a girl already in a house AT THE SCHOOL YOU ARE ATTENDING.

first off she will immediately analyze you and the first matching house she thinks of probably would be a good choice. if you act like a mute and mumble to her she will refer you to a particular house of similar guys -- if you actually have social skills and are well received you will probably get a similar suggestion.

your best bet is to rely on yourself and friends, people you live with.

good luck. its not a decision to take lightly if you plan on doing it for the long haul.

I am in NO WAY making a decision off what people on here say, just throwing it out there.

For those that claim frats are for people that can't make friends, I lived in the dorms last year and they just didn't do it for me. Friends weren't a problem at all as I had a lot of great times (played a lot of sports and gambled, pretty much what I like to do) I just want more of the 'college experience'. The frat that I made pretty good friends with is Phi Kappa Sigma, which I'm really thinking about pledging at. It's not like I'm doing this blindly, I probably shoulda said that in the original post.

For those that took the question seriously, thanks for the comments. Just interested in peoples thoughts.

Oh yeah? Did you go to WSU or something? Or are you just talking out of your ass on the topic just like everything else?

for all you bashers...Fraternity = networking....I have many contacts from it..it was the best shit in college...booze, girls, and making great friends..I still made many friends form my freshman year living in the dorm.. but joining the fraternity was one of the best decisions I made..I have my current job partly becuase of my affiliation with it, and if I ever am in a situation of need, I have many people to call on and vice versus. say hwat you want about it, but unless you've joined one or been apart of what it is, you really have the slightest idea or clue.. have a great day

best decision of my life also. Have 60 or 70 guys that I could call in a pinch and they would do what they could to help me out, even guys I have not talked to in years. That is a nice feeling to have. Most of my best friends all fraternity brothers. Not for everyone but they have their place for some if the correct house is chosen.

I belonged to one, but was at a small school. We didn't buy into the brotherhood thing, just a place to live.
