If it is worth giving them money when they are younger, it is usually even more worthy to give to them when they're older. Once they're past 18-20, they have their own bills. Like already mentioned, unless they land a high paying job, you've had 20 to 30 years more of being able to earn an income. It is more helpful to give them $20 or $50 when they are grown than when they are kids

I don't have any Nieces or Nephews that I know of.

However I used to receive a Birthday card from my Aunt Elsa ( German born) as a young teen ( in the 70's) with $5 in it. It was always addressed to:

Master Douglas XXXXX

as I recall that seemed to end when I was around 16. I take Master to mean not quite old enough to be called Mister ? So she ended it when I was about 16,best as I recall ? Elsa is still alive to my best knowledge.

I guess I got cut at about 16.

It could be way different being very close to said relative.

To this day my grandmother sends me check, every birthday.

I cashed all my grandmother's check once from Chemical Bank. It caused her account to be overdrawn and when she called this girl told her to drop dead.

I stopped a few years ago. Kids are just too spoiled these days. I bought a $400 gift only to find out that it was never even used. I said "Fuck that. No more gifts."

If it was something they had never used before you spent $400 on it, why would you think they would use it after you spent the money on it?

It could have been a $400 giftcard for all we know. LOTS of people never use them.

It was one of those pool propellers from Seadoo. They could have used it trust me. They use all kinds of crap for the pool.

Doug, I found out because I saw it in the box a few months later thrown around and asked if they got around to using it.

Of course they could have used it. But if they really valued using it, they would have already bought that Seadoo propeller instead of that other crap

Stopping the gift-giving is absolutely the right choice. Using the fact that you have different values than the recipient to paint them as spoiled is absolutely incorrect

Ok man you know me and my family and what they use or don't use. They told me we didn't use it. That's it. That's not an argument. You're just being a douche and trying to start something right now saying that my values this and my values that.

I'm calling Auntie Elsa: I'm 47, she owes me 30+ years of B-day gifts correlated to the CPI plus interest !

when did anyone say anything differently? If they didn't use it, it was because they didn't value it as much as you thought they would. That isn't an idea many people would argue with and it doesn't require any knowledge of your family to come to that conclusion and it seems we both agree completely it is the reason the vast majority of gift-giving should stop

I don't really know what that is, KON !

Oh well ! Some gifts miss badly !

I'd be a bit pissed to see it unopened in the box months later !....or whatever happened !

By the age of 21, all my gifts from aunts and uncles had stopped. I currently have 7 nieces and nephews ranging from 15 to 4. We give gifts each year, christmas and birthday. The birthday gifts will likely stop at 21; although I see no problem with 18 being the cut off.
