What's your opinion on these "Free Range" parents?

Long story short, these parents' kids have been picked up twice now. Once, they were a mile or so away from their house, the second time they were just a few blocks from the house.

Mom and dad let them go off to the park on their own and explain the kids should be able to explore their surroundings. Problem is, Maryland law says younger kids have to be supervised by a kid over the age of 13. These two kids are 10 and 6. Essentially, Maryland CPS says these parents are breaking Maryland law. Cops were called.

Shit when I was 10 I was out riding bikes in the neighborhood with other kids, playing hide and seek and shit. I had a paper route around that age (maybe it was more like 12) and did it by myself every morning.

there are many laws that are not good. To me, this is one of them and they have the right to not follow it.

I wouldn't quite go that far man. We are a nation of laws and they have to be followed. You don't have to agree with them.

I disagree. I am not saying you should be allowed to murder whoever you want either. Its against the law to drive faster than the speed limit but most of us have done so. If lucky, we get away with it. I suspect that speed limits are put in place to stop the crazy ass drivers that do 80 mph in a 30 mph zone for example. But many times you see cops ticketing those that are barely over the limit. Why? Because there are tons of those and only a few extreme speeders. And that means more money in fines for the city. So, the law to me, should be used as a guideline only in certain instances. No one wants to see a 2 year old out alone but when I was 10, I played street hockey until it was dark, ran home to eat and then played under the street lights.

Not me man. I'm not a helicopter parent. I don't care what other people do as long as they aren't physically beating their kid in public.

My buddies house was a little over a mile and we also used to ride up to the park which was a ways. Just looked up on google maps 1.7 mi. Never seemed like a big deal. Now if I grew up in the hood there is no way my mom would have let us do this.

at 10 id probably almost trust my kid to drive if he was big enough to handle the car. kids are smart as hell man 10 is plenty old to watch your little brother or sister. the world isnt as crazy as they want you to believe

Totally agree. Times have changed. We no longer let kids sleep up on the back dash of cars like when I was growing up on long road trips either. 10 and 6? Its just not smart these days.

Maybe not smart, but you think it should be illegal? Feeding your kids McDonald's every day is just as dumb and dangerous, but it's not illegal cause this is 'Merica and "I'll raise my kid however I damn well please". How is this different?
