What's with soccer and "the little Kids" ?

I was just at the "friendly" MANCHESTER U vs. BARCELONA match . Lone behold , As the teams walked out to start the match, each player was teamed up with a little kid . I 've seen this before in EURO matches and often wondered if this was tradition or just something for the little turds ? I'm not a huge soccer guy so I really don't get some of this , but it's interesting nonetheless . By the way , I've Never seen so many DRUNK Limies in one sitting . It was very entertaining and makes me curious about how passionate they really are in Europe .

These kids get a chance to lead their idols out onto the pitch and get their photographs taken with the team. You guys bring a perfectly innocent and thoughtful gesture down to this shit. Whats the big deal Baseball teams do it all the time here.... Just yesterday at the Braves game each player went out on the field with a little tike. They run out on the field, the player gives them a ball and an autograph or something and they run off. Seen it in other sports too.
