Whatever you do, definitely plan at least a couple days to leave the resort area and see other parts of the country. Costa Rica isn't like Mexico or Hawaii where you can just avail yourself of your home resort and maybe the city it is in. You will miss too much diversity if you don't explore elsewhere. If you just want a simple resort experience with a beach and nightlife, Mexico is probably a better bet.

It really depends on what you are looking to do. Are you the adventerous type? The outdoors type? The stay in the hotel and get spoiled type.... Down here there are so many different options. Judge is right on with his recommendations. I would say try the Pachira Lodge in Tortuguero....if you like nature.

I like Si Como No in Manuel Antonio, there are a few other hotels at Manuel Antonio that are nice also. Only use MA if you are bring your better half, it's a couples destination. Check link for different options.
