I high stakes hand is being played. 6 players at the table each ante $50 and 2 bets with max bet each at $100.

Five card draw, you can bet up to $100 after you see your cards and up to $100 raise.

MAX cards that can be drawn is 3.

You get on the deal

Ace of Clubs, 10 of hearts, Queen of Hearts, Ace of Hearts, King of Hearts.

Do you hold

The two aces or do you throw away the ace of clubs ?

Which is the smartest move ?

With 6 players playing, you probably need a real good hand to win. Just a pair of Aces might not do it. Of course, if you go for it and draw any non Heart below a 9 you have sh*t.

Statiscally one has to be superior to the other. I would think toss the black Ace would be the percentage play.

I don't play draw poker AT ALL so have no idea on the right move. I would guess it depends on a lot of things that we don't know from your post. How the opponents play I am against, how many cards they drew, is there any qualifiers to open and/or win etc....

Saying all that I probably just keep the pair of aces. A bird in the hand is better than one in the bush.

Yeah, I toss the black Ace because then you will either have a power hand or sh*t and then you know where you stand. If you hold the pair of Aces and draw either nothing or a third Ace or another pair, you are kind of stuck in the middle road. You will either be betting big money hoping noone has a better hand or you fold and maybe throw away a winner.

I mean even 3 aces is very beatable with 6 players. There is a good chance one of the other 5 players gets a staright, flush or better. So you are stuck betting a very beatable hand. Of course, throwing the Ace away you may draw a Queen, King, or another ACe and be in the same boat, but If you get a Heart ot the Jack of Hearts you can bet heavy and if you lose you lose.

Danny - I don't know the answer but if you give me a pair of aces before the draw I will play against 5 opponents all night long. Especially if I am dealing and can go last. Don't discount that hand so quickly. Drawing 3 cards with a pair of rockets is not the worst position in the world. It takes two pair or better to beat you before we all draw cards. They can improve of course but so can we.

Yeah I'd take that spot all day long and just keep the aces just about every time. You won't win them all but it's got to be a long term money maker. Maybe Swami, SP or Tekari know the correct answer.

Yeah I agree Patrick. I am just thinking before I get into a High stakes shootout I want a very good hand.

That may not be high stakes to everyone. If the stakes were small - $2 to $5 bets then maybe my position changes.

I would be a little gunshy to start seeing $100 bets when I am holding 3 Aces even, thats because to me $100 a bet is a lot.

I would rather either have sh*t and fold or have a damn good hand to bet $100 a pop on, and then if I lose I lose.

I mean honestly if I am holding 3 Aces and 2 of the other players start betting and Raising, I might have to fold those 3 aces.

So I guess it depends a lot on what you consider high stakes, and just what kind of hand you would require to be willing to risk big money.

6 for 6 first quarters have gone Under - could it be 11 for 11 ?

Seems no-one yet mentioned keeping two aces and any other card. The slightly reduced chance of getting trips or two pair is compensated by the illusion that you may be drawing to trips.

Danny,

The play is, not knowing the other players, play the Ace's and raise.

I'm normally a big proponent of making the play that gives you an easy decision on the next round, but in this case keeping the Aces is just a better play. Unless the action before the draw indicates that someone out there has a powerhouse, your Aces are a great hand. Why take a 1 in 5 chance of having a good hand after the draw when by keeping the Aces you have a good hand already? If you raise with the Aces you're unlikely to get five callers (unless the game is very weak) and against one or two callers you may not even need to improve the Aces.

Of course you also have the advantage of being dealer, so if someone in front of you stands pat you might have to have a rethink!

On Danny's point about $100 being a lot of money, I'd say if the stakes you're playing are so high that you're afraid to make the best play then you shouldn't be playing for those stakes. There's nothing I like more than to have a player at the table who is playing for stakes that are too high for him, because you can just bully him out of hands by raising. Once you've decided to play a game you have to make the right plays even if that means risking a lot of money, and in this case the right play is almost always to keep the Aces.

If you sit in the last seat and everyone drew 3 cards , then keep the aces and bet the max, otherwise if some drew 2, they might have trips or pulling out their arse, then I'd throw in the black ace! Most likely I'd keep the aces! Then again if I'm up money I might try to pull that card out of my arse if I'm chasing my money I'd keep the aces and hope for the best!!

I wish I was sitting at a poker table with most of you guys. I will play for any stakes. The right answer in 5 card draw, no matter what position you are in is to hold the aces and raise when it comes your turn. A pair of aces is very strong in 5 card draw and will win 92% of the time.

I would keep the Queen and Ten and throw away the other 3 cards. The guy who won the WSOP last year only played Queen-Ten. It's a magic hand. Luck is unimportant in poker.

Yes Pat Mc, you are not allowed to sit at my table. Only those who choose to fish for the royal/flush are welcome.

Now if there was a large high hand prize then it might be worth it to go for the royal. At the Indians near me a diamond royal would get you 6 grand.
