I have family in Huntington Beach and Laguna Niguel so I have been to California ALOT. Never had spent much time north of Huntington Beach(except Santa Anita and Santa Monica) but recently got back from a trip in which I met my wife in SF and we drove down the coast to Pacific Grove. This area has some AMAZING scenery. Carmel,Monterey,Pebble Beach,Big Sur. Would definitely go back there again. Huntington Beach is nice,Laguna Niguel/Dana Point is also nice as is San Diego . If you decide to go and need some sightseeing tips feel free to ask.

Definitely go to The Pantry downtown for breakfast. Make sure to get the Sourdough Toast

I love LA. You’ll have to spend a day or two in Burbank where they shoot the movies and tv shows.

go to La Jolla and walk down to the inlet and swim with the seals. you can access the stairway behind the pink hotel (can't miss it). Torrey Pines GC is right up the street from there but can't really see much from the road

i also dig carlsbad. would recommend spending a night there and just barhopping the main drag. some great restaurants and bars with outdoor seating. decent beach there as well just across the main road.

great craft beer scene if you're into that. Stone Brewing is very impressive, Ballast Point is decent, Alesmith, Coronado, Port/Lost Abbey, Alpine, and Pizza Port all recommended

Great advice in all three paragraphs. Good choice as San Diego, in my opinion, is a much better place to live and/or vacation than the Los Angeles area. I'd also visit the Gaslamp district of San Diego, maybe check out a Padres game if in town and also hit up Del Mar and the Solana Beach area. You can take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner for great scenery up and down the coast.

Have fun

rolltide is spot on. I would go to the wild animal park in Escondido rather than
the san diego zoo in balboa park. both are part of the same organization, but
the wild animal park is more open. if you do go, strongly consider paying extra
for one of the excursions into the main area of the park. well worth it. realize
it will be hot in Escondido until at least mid September. sea world is a pass IMHO.
for food, I would suggest the fish market grille either downtown or in del mar.
if you go to the one downtown, go upstairs for a better menu and a better view.
hillcrest has some very nice eating establishments. for casual food, i'd suggest
Sammy's woodfired pizza , excellent salads there. weird guy over and out, hope this helps.

Head over to Coranado Island, just nice quick trip and fun walking around , drive or take the Ferry.....SD is one of my favorite cities not a better walking city in my opinion. Head up to little Italy and I think it is Saturdays they have a Killer Farmers Market goes for Blocks and Blocks and Great food

FYI, goldstar events has some of the excursions on sale at the wild
animal park at a big discount. this price does not include admission.
