Don't be so deceived by today's athleticism. Today's athletes rely too much on their so-called athleticism. The athletes of yester-year would hold their own. They were not so enamored with style, as they were with results. Chamberlain vs Shaq...Gibson vs Clemens...Sayers vs Bush....Beamon vs whoever...Connors vs Roddick...TV exposure and media coverage creates heroes on a nightly basis. That did not exist even 25 years ago. No video (film) of Wilt's 100 point game in Hershey, PA. Now we have film of everybody's visit to the urinal!

It's no scret I'm a fan! Here is the difference between him and the todays players IMO. He did the flashy stuff because he had to not for the cameras. His teams were that bad. Plus, he was so strong fundamentally that he could pull the trick stuff off. The guys today learn the tricks first and the fundamentals later. Amazing passer! Freakish ballhandler who put today's "Streetballers" to shame! Lights out shooter who definately would have benefitted from the 3-Pointer but would pop from anywhere anytime. Since no one I've ever heard of worked harder than the Pistol I think he would have been more athletic and better conditioned today and it actually would work to his advantage.

His teams in college and the pros weren't very good because.....1) His father (Press Maravich) was given the coaching job at lowly LSU simply to get Pete Maravich on campus. His dad was the ultimate controller. Pete didn't go to LSU to ball hog, his dad dragged him there 2) He was drafted by the New Orleans Jazz...An expansion team. If memory serves, he blew his knee out and never really lived up to his potential in the pros. That being said he was still a 5 time All-Star before the injury!

I saw a show on ESPN a few years ago where they asked Isaiah Thomas, Magic Johnson, etc. Who was the best showman to ever play the game and almost to a man they said Maravich. That was impressive considering the sources.

I agree offensively because it is all about flash and dunks...but defensively, athleticism is key. These guys are so much quicker and physical.

Clipper,

I can't argue that he would be a defensive liability at the NBA level. He was in the 1970's too. Still there's a lot of guys on the All-Star squad every year who's idea of a good game is outscoring the other guy 30-28.

Absolutely...I just meant I don't think he would have put up those gawdy offensive stats in college with athletic defenders. He would have got his points because he could make shots (look at Reddick from Duke)...but I don't think he would have been able to run circles around people and pull his Harlem Globetrotters crap.

Pistol Pete would get 35 a game. He would play for a losing team too.

Pete, offensively would be at least as good as Nash! And in the NBA, who cares defensively?

The beauty of Pete was his harlem globetrotter "crap" was ahead of its time.In 69 nobody had ever seen the stuff he could do with the ball passing dribbling or shooting. I saw him at Pauley in 69 against some real athletic bruins and he was unforgettable. He was stuck on crap teams college and pro and like Kobie is so adeptly proving one man is nothing. With the three available he would average 50 in the ACC no problem. If JJ reddick can average 20 no problem for a real athlete like Pistol to go 10 for 24 from three point range plus add a few layups and a dozen freethrows.
