I'm not yet 30, so I havent had the pleasure of witnessing as much of the crazy world of sports as a lot of guys out there.

Maybe we can have an entertaining thread here. I am very interested in hearing about but not limited to the following:

Largest spreads in basketball, football side and total, college and pro. And what happened in the game, which side were you on?

Huge moneylines- I'm sure the Yankees of old must have had some huge ML's, maybe not. What about totals on baseball, Coors field has had some big ones, were there other parks or teams that were 17 plus.

Big upsets- Buster Douglas over Tyson was pretty big, Broadway Joe's guarantee was big, both of these come to mind because they were such public events. What were the moneylines on these, and what other events were big upsets.

HUGE line moves. When I saw Dallas/SAC open at 204, my first thought was "shouldnt this be 2-1-4??" What other sides and totals have had major line moves and how did these moves do? These can be on single events or over the course of a series or season.

Never bet against Kansas State at home playing a football doormat, no teaser will help you.

I seen to remember that Florida State was something like a 70 point favorite over the University of Cincinnati many years ago, and won
the game 71-0.

I've never seen a 70 point spread in football, is that what it opened at?

Ironically there was huge line move in bases today. The Cubs total moved from 8 to 13, easily flew over the total then got rained out. It's such a shady rule on totals. If it goes over it goes over, playing the game longer doesnt change the fact.

Last year I think the Eagles were a 24pt favorite (huge in the NFL) over the Texans with a moneyline of something like -2000.

In 2001 CFB Oklahoma State beat Oklahoma straight-up 16-13 as a 37pt. dog. (painful memory for me) Don't know if there was a moneyline but it would have been sweet for anyone who had the balls.

Gold Sheet
OKLAHOMA STATE (AT)
(SUR: 4-7 PSR: 4-6 O-U: 4-5)
S.01 S. Miss. u45' W +11' 9-17
S.08* LA. TECH L -10 30-23
S.22* Texas A&M u46' L +10' 7-21
S.29* N'WEST. ST. 24-0
O.06* MIZZOU (OT) o44' L -6' 38-41
O.13 TEXAS o50' L +17' 17-45
O.20 Iowa St. u49' L +8 14-28
O.27 COLO. u47' W +9' 19-22
N.10 TEX. TECH o52 L +6 30-49
N.17 Baylor o48 W -7 38-22
N.24 Oklahoma u50 W +27 16-13

Actually Oklahoma was just a 27 pt fav, lesson should be do not bet against rival double digit dogs very often. By the way, money lines disappear around +14 or so.

1989 Notre Dame -66 SMU just off the death penalty. The media asked Lou if they would kill SMU since they were 66 point favs and he said there is “no way we will cover”… ND 59-6 final. Holtz will not embarrass the hapless.

Typically books will not line spreads 60+ so ND will probably stand as the biggest of all time to my knowledge unless you count the non-lined schools…

Biggest upset of all time, 1986 UTEP 23 BYU 16 getting +37.5 over the defending media given national champs.

NFL Largest Spread:

1993 Bungals +23.5 at Niners, Bungals get the money losing by 13, SF 21-8.

Yeah I guess it was 27...
From that day on I added a new rule to my sports betting strategy. Don't bet on your favorite team. Not only did I lose my wager but as an OU fan, it is terribly shameful to lose to OSU.....

I've seen some monster lines in college basketball. I don't remember the eaxct umber but I believe Maryland was favored by around 40 over Loyola MD this season. They didn't cover but came close to it.

Back in the early 90's the Buffalo Bills were favored by 20.5 at home over the Indianapolis Colts in 1991 and by 20 in 1992. The final scores? Buffalo 42-6 and 38-0.

Indy was so bad during that 1991 season (they went 1-15) that the Polo Grill, a restaurant in Baltimore (former home of the Colts) advertised its champagne brunch one week like this: "This Sunday, only the Colts game has a bigger spread."

Mr Tanaka: Maybe back in the 70's a loss was shameful but OSU is 5-3 SU the last eight and more than just competitive since Pat Jones left. The King only lost to OSU once but history is for books.

Moneylines certainly don't disappear at 14+ points or so... You just have to have a book that offers them... 5Dimes for once ALWAYS offers a moneyline on games -- so you'll often see lines like Virginia Tech -50000 and the like.

NFL - Going back to 1983, the biggest line was -23.5 as Lou stated. SF was also a -23 point favorite in '87 and didn't cover that game either, versus Atltanta

College FB - The ND-SMU game Ben talked about was actually only a -52.5 point favorite on 11/11/89 and ND DID cover that game, winning 59-6.

The biggest line I show, going back to 1983 is on 10/21/89 and it was Houston over that same SMU team, winning and covering a -59 point line, 95-21.

College BKB - I show two -46.5 point favorites, Duke over Florida A&M on 3/12/99 (NCAA Tournament) and N. Carolina over Hawaii on 12/1/93. Neither team covered, Duke winning 99-58 and N. Carolina 92-77.

NBA 11/13/94 Seattle over the LA Clippers laying -21 and winning and covering 115-90.

That doesn't include this year's numbers. I don't handicap the NBA yet so I don't have this year's numbers updated yet.

Baseball - Again, I haven't started handicapping baseball yet so I don't have the last two years of lines updated. Prior to the past two years, the biggest number I see is a $4 favorite. Three of those favorites won and two lost. Three times it happened in 1998 with the Braves (Maddux twice, Glavine once) and also in 1999 and 2000 with Arizona and Randy Johnson.

He may have been. Keep in mind, my Baseball db doesn't have the last two years updated yet. Before that, I don't show that they have pitched against each other.

Wasn't Oakland a -380 favorite over Bonderman earlier this year?

The chalk eaters had some awfully dry mouths that night.
