Eye-opener: Should Greg Oden retire or try to play again?
When
Greg Oden was dipped in basketball's River Styx, somebody forgot to cover his knees.
That
Achilles heel has gotten him carried out on his shield yet again.
The Portland big man, who has not played since December of 2009, will have microfracture surgery on his left knee and be out for the entire season.
The No. 1 pick in 2007, Oden missed that season with a fractured patella in his right knee. He has played 82 games in his career.
Sam Bowie and
Bill Walton (both Portland centers) and currently Houston
Yao Ming are men in the middle who have had leg or foot problems that curtailed or limited their careers although Walton, one of the greatest to ever play the game, was able to limp into the Hall of Fame.
"Some things you just can't explain," Blazers coach
Nate McMillan said.
Oden was not offered a contract extension by Portland and will be a restricted free agent this summer. The team can match any offer he receives.
If you have your health you have everything which means Oden is left right now with nothing. Walton's stellar career was followed by such excruciating pain that he says he contemplated suicide.
