Slurpee - The nuclear bombing of Japan in August of 1945 saved many more lives than it cost. The US was going to be forced to invade Japan itself, the cost in lives of that invasion is estimated to be roughly ten times the cost in human lives that were lost at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Many of the casualties would have been American soldiers. In fact more people were killed during conventional bombing by US forces in a single night earlier in 45 (Tokyo bombings). There is lot written on the subject, and most historians believe Truman had to drop the bombs when he did.

Wil,I believe the dropping of the bomb was not needed.All the US had to do was to agree to allowing the Emporer to keep his position which we ultimately did.I am convinced that some people in the US government at that time,wanted to use the bomb as a show of force towards Russia.But as to the initial question,its hard to show sympathy toward Japan considering all the atrocities the commited during the war.Also the difference being that we were at war with them.So I hardly consider what we did an act of terroism.I believe it was wrong and not needed,but hardly terroism.

Slurp,it wasn't the rest of the world.It was some of the world.And no I was not surprised.I was living in CR at the time,and some locals came up to me with tears in their eyes,and consoled me.I think anyone who would applaud such an event is the type of person you should be scared of.How could I rejoice if an earthquake struck Iran,or North Korea or any such country and scores of people died.I personally can't rejoice in death no matter whose it is.
Judge, a couple of guys I know I went back to one of the guys' house, on the way they stopped and picked up beers and microwave popcorn. Two white guys sat in the living room and watched the towers go down, cheering and jumping for joy all the way.

I was living in Toronto during 9-11 and can say that I never ran into or talked to anyone who wasn't shocked, horrified, and deeply saddened by that attack. Maybe you know 2 sick fukks who cheered as the towers came down (although I have serious doubts), but that was certainly not the prevailing mood in 'the rest of the world'.

Judge, the drop or not drop argument has seen volumes of debate in the last 50 odd years. The bottom line is an invasion was inevitable if we did not use the bombs. A lot has been said about demonstrating that we had the bombs etc. You have to have an idea about the mentality in Japan in that era to understand why Truman did what he did. Perhaps you do, I don't know. As President, Truman made some of the most crucial decisions in history. Soon after V-E Day, the war against Japan had reached its final stage. An urgent plea to Japan to surrender was rejected. Truman, after consultations with his advisers, ordered the atomic bombs dropped on cities devoted to war work. Japanese surrender quickly followed. There really is not much to link the two events (trade center - bombing Japan) other than both were very tragic.
