With the rumours about a couple books in trouble right before football season I was wondering if there's any pattern in terms of what time of year books generally go under?

You'd figure the best time would be the Super Bowl, right before most people pull out their football money.

Also, it seems to me right before football season starts would be the worst time. With so much money about to pour in for FB. They'd be mere weeks from getting a nice cash infusion.

What times of year have other books gone under?

There's always next year, like in 75, 90-93, 99 &

G,
In my limited experience everyone hypes that books will fall after the superbowl, but it seems to be random from my experience.

I guess it's when they're out of money.

Yes, it would be much more organized if they all agreed on a date to go under.

Usually a month before football season starts (ahem) and also a week or 2 before and after Superbowl.

From my financial knowledge of the books I would guess they are most vulnerable around the end of May for lack of financial resources. Most betting falls off drastically after March Madness ends and given a 30 to 60 day cycle to have bills come due and deal with the torrent of withdrawls and then the realization hits that there is no way to make it until money starts flowing in come late August. If they were trying to be scammers and take your money then I concur they would do it about Friday before the first Sunday of NFL season.

Gamblor, what part of Canada are you from? The reason I ask is, I had a couple of friends that used to use the term gamblor when we were playing cards for someone who would start losing and then go on tilt betting crazy. I have lost touch with them, but it wouldn't suprise me if any of the guys were on these forums.

Actually Dante most books are in good shape then. The withdrawls do come up in large numbers then, but its almost all just the small change players that just bet football and their withdrawls are mostly not over a dime. The only way a book would be in trouble then is if they catered to a lot of whales that ran real well for the year. After March Madness and as the NBA regular season ends the last of the squares start bailing and the big money often rebalances then as well so that you see high liabilities and if the season hasn't gone well that would be the weakest point. I think if books were smart they would pay interest on your account and offer reups around April to make sure they had a good balance to last until football got going unless they did a lot of good bases business.

Yep my guess would also be books are probably most flush going in to week #1 of the NFL season. I wonder how many if any are desperately needing to win the first few weeks of the season.....

One of the unwritten rules of gambling is when flush you can seemingly do no wrong. When short and in a must win situation you can't pick a place ticket in a 2 horse field though. LOL. Nor can you get laid in a whore house with a $1000 bill taped to your forehead but that's another story....

Strange how that works huh? Same applies when somebody goes on tilt, be it the craps table, baccarat, sportsbettin, etc.,etc. I would highly recommend going AGAINST anybody you see on tilt in these situations. Remember once at the Horseshoe I was playing $25 a hand at Baccarat and some misfit came flying into the game on complete 100% tilt and laid down a stack of $100 chips on BANKER totaling at least $2,000. Of course PLAYER won. Being the astute player that I was, I had upped my ante to $50 on PLAYER.

WildBill's remarks were definitely the case some years ago, when quiet periods of the year caused everyone cash flow problems.

However, recent years has seen sports betting go global and although American money is not insignificant, Far East money is huge. With the English Soccer season lasting from Aug-May, books go under because of incompetence or just plain losing, which can happen anytime nowadays.
