I do believe the Elites come with longer warranties than most other plasma displays, which accounts for some of the massive price differential.
Panasonic 800 series is the best Plasma for the money. Very close to Pioneer Elite and a whole lot cheaper. I have the 58" 800 Series and it is the best I've seen. Below is a link to the 50".

Seymour, the SheBar sold electronics from 1999-2008 and here's a quick thumbnail
Plasma big screens often a better view for sporting events and movies with lots of motion or animation(action etc)
LCD a better overall picture for most other HD programming (TV series, non-action or animated movies)
Plasmas virtually impossible to repair when the teeny teeny gas bubbles break, as they will begin to do after a couple years. While one such break is virtually indiscernible, having multiples in same area creates mild fuzzy spots.
Plasmas physicall heavier and physically hotter when left on for extended period.
She favors Sony and Samsung for brands on either type, though there are several that can be reasonably given high grades.

Kinda surprised to hear you didn't like the LG. I was just about to buy my first HD tv (right before a bunch of things went to hell and stopped me) and I had decided on a LG (37 inch). Was getting a great deal too. When looking at their 32 inch to 42 inchers next to the competition the LG looked better for less money, and rated highly too.
But 50 inch is a different ballgame I guess. Panasonic and Samsung are the way to go. And Plasma too for a 50 inch, or at least I would if I were you (and could afford it). Sony makes great sets too, but you'll pay more just for the name.
