play small stakes like suggested maybe even play the play money tables for a few months get a feel for the game a bit .... no need to rush into real money unless your friend wants to be the fish at the table... and trust me they will spot him within a few minutes
I would start with the .05/.10 cash games maybe a 6 person ring table
so online practice really does no good?
where do you find nickel and dime tables?
the even have as low as .01/.02 tables even every site has them.... Ultimatebet / poker stars etc.
This is not a get rich quick thing it will take a LONG , LONG time to even get close to mastering it and making coin

I think you first need to understand that cash and tournament games are two different games and played differently. I play mostly tournament games and in those games I feel it's important to remain very patient and throw many hands away that I know will get me in trouble.
Another good tip is to limit the chase of the flush or straight. I think it's a good move in some situations but often times newer players keep chasing that neon rainbow to brokeville.
I am very aggressive at a live table yet not so aggressive online.
Those are a few.
Not sure how much experience you have but I would go read a book about poker from Doyle Brusnon super system II. Good read for a rookie or refresher course..
so in tournaments you fold alot more and in cash games you are more aggressive?
