What serious tips do you give a new poker player?

Pick a type of poker:
holdem, stud, draw, razz, etc
Pick the style:
online, live
Treat the amount like a unit. You never want to risk more than two percent of your bankroll on one session.
Whatever style and game you choose try to master it before moving on to another.

This is not a get rich quick thing it will take a LONG , LONG time to even get close to mastering it and making coin profit he will lose alot before he wins is his bankroll ready for that?

dont tilt after bad beats or chase losses..if you notice you start doing this, take a short break to collect yourself after a bad beat..always try and play your "A" game

There are many " tells" the regulars will pick up on your newbee friend pretty quick he might win a few small pots as they call him down to read how he plays them bam they rape him ... until he gets better

I would suggest playing very tight and premium hands for a bit and do not be mad when he loses

I think you first need to understand that cash and tournament games are two different games and played differently. I play mostly tournament games and in those games I feel it's important to remain very patient and throw many hands away that I know will get me in trouble.

Another good tip is to limit the chase of the flush or straight. I think it's a good move in some situations but often times newer players keep chasing that neon rainbow to brokeville.

I am very aggressive at a live table yet not so aggressive online.

Not sure how much experience you have but I would go read a book about poker from Doyle Brusnon super system II. Good read for a rookie or refresher course..

im a rookie at poker as is my brother-in-law, we are both learning. We are thinking of heading up to Winstar and playing this weekend at the lowest limit table we can find for practice but if online training is what we need first we will do that.

like I said in your newbee friend's case he will get raped but the raping will be less if he sticks to solid play and plays pretty much premium hands for a bit and tries very little bluffing until he gets a little better then branch out with the hole cards to play
