Insiders,
We will definitely have to get the OLD CODGERS FORUM up and running as we are all on the same page. In my Bookmaking time I seen every system there was and often had to listen to the gibberish to keep a Punter happy. What I found incredible was if you asked the same person about a short-cut in his trade, he would roll around laughing at you. :drink:

So lets look at the facts. I would put forward a theory, probably silly but if you cant win at this game then a bankroll isnt going to help you...

Agree with you there. I've always said if you are playing -EV then you will go broke, only variables in how long it takes is how often you play, what stakes you are gambling at and if you live long enough for it to happen. Fancy bookkeeping can't make a loser into a winner.

Disagree with you here and on the rest of what you posted. Not many things more imortant than money management for a player. I've known talented cappers, horse guys and poker players who have the smarts to win but lack the organization and basic money management skills. Hell they don't even know what their bankroll is, long as there is money around then they figure they are doing fine. That is short term thinking and almost never ends well.

Money management and bankroll are not terms people throw around to look cool on the forums, they are necessary evils of this business. If a guy does not have a bankroll set aside and using it daily as a working part of his game/strategy then he is not a professional and has very little chance to succeed long term. Also don't even get me started on the value of multiple outs and shopping for the best lines. Those aren't just mods telling you it's smart to have more than one out, it's just about anyone with a clue saying the same thing.

Anyway don't want to argue, I enjoy reading your thoughts, just respectfully disagree with you here. Carry on.

Pat,
I dont see this as a disagreement just maybe a views from different perspectives. I see this very much as a Horse and Cart story, I never worry about Money Management or Stakes as it is built in through years of experience. I understand what your saying about the winning Guy getting his staking wrong but at least he's over the hump and beating the book, proper staking comes through experience, it took me 10 years to learn, you have more on the Winners and less on the Losers. :drink:

very well said.

it's foolish for a gambler to not know what his starting "bankroll" is. you can't just go around tossing money here and there without knowing how much of your total investment capital you're putting at risk on any given play. if you think just being able to pick winning bets is the end all/solve all, you're wrong.

granted, if you pick enough winners you may be able to survive for quite a few years with this "fly by the seat of your pants" approach. but in the long run you're almost certain to be betting too high an amount on your plays (when compared to your actual overall amount of betting capital) and an inevitable losing streak will wipe you out.

i've seen it happen too many times. a lot of the guys i've learned from, guys who are better handicappers than i'll probably ever be, they've either had to start over again with new money or have long since called it a day. they never learned proper money management.

it's the same with the stock market. you may be able to pick some great stocks but if you don't diversify your portfolio and spread your risk enough you're headed for disaster. why do you any of you guys think sportsbetting is any different?

Queenie,
A Question, have you got software that knocks out these endless, mundane, straight out of a manual answers or are you just a complete, one of those bollocks everyone avoids in Public. :drink:

maybe the "if i can pick winners everything else will fall into place" approach works for you...

but that approach sure doesn't work for me. i wish it did, believe me! it would make this business a helluva lot more fun. but all it does is keep me (and nearly everyone else who tries it) from maximizing profits.

anyway...i don't know why you always seem to get so upset when i post something. you must really have an unhappy existence. i'm sorry that i seem to trouble you so much. i hope you can get the professional help you obviously need.
