since we'll prob never get a definitive number, what percentage do you think actually win real money betting sports or any other type of gambling? and do you think that you are a winning gambler?

as far as myself, i rarely make a wager on sporting events although i do enjoy going to casinos. i also know that i may get up on the casinos, but i normally always give it back before i leave. in other words, i realize that its only for entertainment and im expecting to have a good time and lose a few or several hundred dollars playing blackjack or craps etc...

anyway, how many here actually win?

I make a reasonable supplemental income off of gambling the last 3 years.

But it took me 5 years of losing to finally get to that point

cool. so in those 5 losing years, can i ask what you learned or figured out that was beneficial to the success youve seen since then?

It was all about discipline for me

Betting wild parlays, chasing, betting sports I suck at, not keeping records, taking the games too emotionally

As soon as I looked at it as a business everything changed.

yeah, i would think chasing is the main reason most dont win. i guess that and parlays. one of the reasons i collect on tuesdays. mnf is a great chase opportunity for my guys apparently. i would also assume that most bookies collect on tuesdays for the same reason? at least thats what my mentor did. after a losing wk, it can get real ugly after a good monday night chase.

Betting to Win vs. Betting to Bet. At least that is the way I look at it.

Live I play $1-$2 NLHE and the occasional tourney. Online I play $0.15-$0.30, $0.25-$0.50, $0.50-$1 NLHE and PLO8 (dominate the 1st 2, still struggle on $.50-$1 online). I always play 4-6 tables, 2 cash games and 4 tournaments.

MTT's I play anything between $2 and $20, if my bankroll allows it I'll play a $50+ tournament. MTT's are my real strength, I always profit on tournaments, my losses come from my cash game leaks which have gotten a lot better this year as I'm way more disciplined and seem to have better reads (a lot of profits come from calling big bluffs on the river with middle/top pair).

I currently play at 888poker.com, Gold status, on my way to become Platinum. They have a book as well but I never placed a bet on it.

cool. i dont know much abt poker other than the home games in town but even those were several yrs ago before the big poker boom. out of curiousity, what do you buy in for at the live 1-2 nlh game. we have a few here and a buddy of mine told me just today that he bought in for a hundred bucks. i told him thats not near enough for that game! i would think at least 1k to sit down?

I tread water long enough to keep betting. But Id never quit the day job. I like action. If a game is on tv, I like to bet it. Have horrible bankroll management and don't care what % I bet. But I'm an honest gambler. No tricks, no magical systems, just my thoughts. But id say overall throughout the year I'm around 51% in all sports. Which means I lose money overall.

1k is definately optimal DEPENDING on your style of play. If you like seeing pots, getting in with 1K is the way to go. Me personally I usually buy in for $200-$500 again, depending on bankroll and money at the table. $100 is not enough, your actions are very limited with $100.

I can tell you poker is the way to go if you wanna make money instead of sports gambling, I mean, gambling it's good but is delusional in most cases to think you'll end up profit, when you bet on sports lose what you can afford and always have fun. It's easier to master poker than sports handicapping , you don't need a bankroll as big, you can score big with low risk (way easier to hit a $5 tournament than a 12 team parlay IMO), luck is less of a factor (variance is more of a factor, depending on style of play) and there's always the chance to win a nice package to travel and play.

If you want to start reading some basic books I can recommend you a couple or even send you the link to download the PDF files.
