great stuff soonerdawg. That's very interesting. Be sure to try and keep in touch with your homies. I did for a couple years then lost touch for the most part. There are a few guys i wish i knew where they were and up to. Definately life long friends you make in military.

1st deployment wasn't bad at all, was stationed on a huge base (FOB Speicher) in tikrit (one of the more U.S. friendly places), 2nd deployment was rough, was part of the surge that got sent in, spent a year living in an iraqi police station in adhymiah, which was the place where we set up walls to split the town in half.....i feel it was worth it, being in such a small area with a lot of fighting when we got there i definitely saw first hand the positive difference we made, i was dispatched to support the scouts, i got to ride out on a few patrols with them but for the most part those guys had it 5x as rough as me, spend all day on a patrol, think you're coming in for some downtime, and BOOM, no sooner than you take your gear off you gotta turn around and roll out again.....i signed up in june of 01, so honestly can't say if i'd do it again knowing that a war's going on, but i like to think that i would.....very proud to have served and made some very good friends who are like family even though i've been out close to 2 years now.....if i ever decide to drive across the U.S., i'd have a place to stay every few hours no matter which route i took.....a great feeling to have

I never knew you were such a Veteran. It takes big balls to enlist knowing your going to Iraq/ Afghanistan.

I have to give him a few +++,s for that, also ! In particular for walking into a war zone, you have to expect to be deployed. I'd never join under those circumstances...if I was like 20-30 years old. I might go as a non-military contractor making 6 figures.

Most scary thing I haven't done: Have sex with this really really cute guy in the village who happens to be HIV positive

Why I haven't: Because condoms do indeed break

Would like to have some drinks with some of forumland's more outspoken posters, why I havent? because Im afraid I'd get too drunk, pass out, and get raped by RogueScholar.

Serving as a gunner conducting convoy security, skydiving, and getting married were my scariest times.
Next up is bungee jumping, just haven't had the chance yet.

marriage can be scary
It can be...but I'll take that over looking for IED's any day.
BTW, anyone who wants to skydive, it isn't as scary as you think. I'm not crazy about heights, but I was actually calm and excited to jump. My wife was jumping too (for the second time), that gave me some added motivation.
