I know many touts. Some are "big name". Others are not. It is the same thing as any other job. They are in it to make a buck. Most touts do not wager on the games they give out. Touts, like bookies, are not in the business to gamble. They are in the business to sell information to those who are trying to make a buck by gambling. I always ask these touts the same question about their alleged winning record and I never get an answer. The question is this: If you claim to be winning at 60% or over on a consistant basis, why go through all the trouble of becoming a tout? Why pay for phone lines, employees, office space, etc... Why run the risk of the Feds cracking down on you? Why not just take that money and play it on the teams that you think will win? After all, 60% continuously is going to make you a very nice profit. That is a ROI of over 14%. IMO, people who have to use a Tout, or who have to tail others when making wagers should NOT be making wagers at all. If you cannot figure it out for yourselves, you are in the wrong business.

What really makes me laugh is that half of the posters in here want to play tout. You see their posts all of the time saying how great they are, how hot they are, and other assorted tout sayings. These are the kind of people that Vegas loves. 21-35, male, macho, drinkers, and know-it-alls. Those guys pay for the fancy neon lights and cute cocktail servers out there. They are known as the "meat" in Vegas because they contribute to the overall success of the casino. They are the "meat" of the Sportsbook. They feed the sportsbook and are easily manipulated. How many people in here actually win money wagering on football? Very few will admit that they lose money, but the truth is that most of them do.

Watch the movie, "Two For The Money".........Pacino plays a successful tout that's making money hand over fist. People see that & they want it......its just like a stockbbroker, if you give out good tips & your customer does well & makes money, you make more money.

Too bad touts aren't monitored as closely.......it always made me wonder if Vegas isn't behind 70% of the touts out there having them give out misinformation.

If you're a tout, good chance you're not betting your own games. Why have the double stress?

If the touts were any good, they wouldn't be selling picks, they would be betting them.

Exactly. Well stated. Vegas will turn a blind eye on some touts just like they will turn a blind eye on certain plays that the "Wise Guys" make. These plays are known to the books. Plays like the "Bait and Switch" which lots of guys in here fall for, are actually encouraged in some Vegas Books because normally Vegas does very well on these type of wagers, breaking even on the actual wagers but cleaning up on the Vig. Then you have the 150,000 people in here who think that every game that they do not win is fixed. Vegas and the Touts love these guys too, because they both know that these guys will continue to throw their money away, and may even buy information to try and stop the losing.

1) many people cannot pick winners on their own. it takes a LOT of time and some smarts and sometimes good connections and most sports bettors have none of the 3. So they look to others to help. This is nothing new and touts have been around a LOOOOONG time because of this. Touts have been around for years because of it because they arent necessarily great cappers or have a terrific system, it's because they are great marketers

2) the proliferation of guys going tout these days from forums and twitter is simple....much better access to more people and there's always #1 above to reel them in. There are guys in the background that push the free cappers to become touts because...money. and more money. money money money. you put in the work, you should get paid. it's a tough business and you have to have tough skin or be excellent marketers.

i'm rambling...but from what it seems nowadays, there are some big marketers who reel forum/twitter cappers into groups of touts. it is what it is...

Another way to look at it is that Tout's who use newsletters have lots of info in addition to picks. I pay much more attention to their info than I do their picks. I like the formats of some of them like Pointwise. Paying for a phone service.....pass. Like SDF points out many guys like to gamble but can't pick that well. Handicapping takes many forms but those who take the time and put out the effort to learn to handicap usually get paid back in the end. It may take years but experience is a plus.

Few get paid back in the end because they simply do not have the patience to stick with a program. Failure to stick with a program, no matter how good some wager may look, is a guarantee recipe for failure. It is really that simple. Today's younger gamblers do not have the patients that is needed. They want to win big NOW. This is the Lottery mentality. Today's young gamblers are not very bright or patient. This is why pro's in poker love playing against these guys in cash games.

Most of us that have been around have paid our dues and learning to handicap football takes patience like you say. I spent years handicapping horses and it takes in many factors like the owner, the trainer, the jockey, the horses record and lineage. Same things apply to football and there are many factors that you have to dig up yourself. Touts get hot and they get cold but in the end many are satisfied to hit 51%. Not me or you I am sure. I have learned to bet 1st halfs and 2nd halfs and totals in the past decade. Lots of money to made there.
