Scalping is playing both sides of a game with odds that guarantee a profit. I'm not an expert so i'll let others answer the other questions.

In order for you to scalp succesfully, first you'd have to guess where the line is gonna move in a game and second you should have to bet a considerably amount of money to make a decent profit. Example
A team -115 11.5K to win 10K
The line must move in your favor untill it reaches something like -130 and you have a comeback of +120 so you would bet
B team +120 9.8K to win 11.76K

You make $200 before the first pitch is even thrown.

Works something like that...

The % you win is so small, you need some real money to get by. You can play Subzero's way, making a play and hoping for the line moving in your desired way, but that is a gamble in itself. Or you can have lots of outs, depending on their respective money situation, that alone can provide guarenteed profits. Like the Orioles +104, Drays +105 at two different books, automatic 4 or 5%...
Everyone doesn't do it because of the required cash, workload, etc.. But if you are a full timer with a little bit behind you, its easy money, just not a lot of it..

This is getting to what OMNIVOROUS FROG does, I take it all in. First you do not hope for line movement your way, that is called speculation. What do you do if it runs the wrong way? A Polish scalp*. Second, better have a big bankroll. My latest scalp is Lakers to win it all +2.00, not to win it all, -1.52. Those were my original numbers. At the same time. Drawback, 2 month hold. Not that I have real deep pockets, but make sure you can do without funds for duration. If you have incoming action, I could get 9 1/2 on Celtics or 8 1/2 on Pacers, but I give out 9, Guys takes either side, you buy 1/2 better, for free or even reduced juice. That is also a scalp. Those are two ways I am OMNIVOROUS, not so much in hoops, but real lucrative in football. It is a skill, and should not be attempted without a almost instant lockin on both positions. Best Wishes...OF

*Polish Scalp: To take two opposite positions and lose money not matter what results.Ultimate bankroll killer.

It's not too hard to scalp SIA against Pinnacle. You might find a +110, -108 type of situation. The problem is SIA's low limits ( $220 on totals), so you only make a couple of dollars. It's better to just take the off (SIA ) line. I only scalp it when I accidently find it, and wasn't going to bet that game.

A) An ugly death for George Custer.
B) A good living for Artie B.
C) A great way to have Books boot you.
D) A market that is on life support at best, compared to it's former glory.
E) All of the above.

Gimme E for a dime!
